We have the opportunity to rent some land to keep D and Belle on rather than keeping them at livery. The stables would need some work but it's doable, my biggest concern is that there are no lights in the school and we both ride after work. What have other people done in similar situations?

Could you a) ride before work?

Or .. b) is the school right next to the stables or anything you could attach a big light to (like the kind of ones you can fix to the outside of someones house?)

Problem is you may have to have planning for things like that!

We were on a yard without floodlights in the arena so I bought a couple of worklights as per the link. I put them in opposite corners & it gave us enough light to work the horses & do flatwork. We'd put them away after use so we never needed planning permission for them. It wasn't perfect but at least we could work the horses.

I have two pairs of worklights which are clipped to the arena fence on long poles so they are high enough. We take them down in spring and put them back up in late autumn so they are "temporary". There are very few houses nearby and the lights point away from them, but I checked with the two residents that might be slightly affected and they are both fine about it. I put some proper outdoor wiring in, using weatherproof sockets and use a generator to power them. 4x500w lamps give enough light on a 20x40 for flatwork, lungeing etc, we just use them on two or three evenings a week for 40 minutes or so.
