i cant decide if i prefer my pony's mane pulled or left natural. when i bought him it was pulled and so was his tail, as he was competed. i left it all to grow ready for winter as he lives out 24/7 and i dont compete or anything so it doesnt really matter. then i started to pull it in march. it looks nice and tidy apart from the fact it seems to just flop over forward from where he's got his head down grazing 23 and a half hours a day!! so now its annoying me as it wont lie flat, so i'm thinking let it grow again. hmmm. what to do! i know its personal preference, but i so cant decide. having worked on a yard yrs ago, i was taught how important turnout is etc, but then i also like long and flowing, which is his winter look anyway. opinions pls!!

the day he arrived....

Have you tried thinning it and how do you pull it?

On one horse I have to use a thinning comb and a solo comb as she hates having her mane pulled and if left to grow out it ends up being fluffy as in your first picture!

But if kept thinned regularly which also makes it much easier to pull, keeping it neat is easy if you keep on top of it.

But despite his fluffy look - I still prefer it pulled :)

I hate pulled tails, but manes are a different story. your boy looks like it's just too thick, so would thin it out, It depends on the breed as to the mane. Friend of mine has a proper heavy coloured stalion, and you cant touch any hair. It takes a bottle of shampoo and conditioner for each leg and one of each for the mane, but we are not allowed pull it. he actually has the curled up mustache.

I do prefer the natural mane on heavier types, but on anything else, short mane is good!!!!!!!!!!!

He does look much younger with it shorter but maybe I am just jealous as my pony has never had a proper mane yet!!! Only had her just over a year and it was really pulled, stood up like a little mohican, its cute but i'd like to at least have the difference to compare. It was starting to grow but had to move her to a yard where she was out 24/7 and it was groomed off from halfway down her neck :(

The top part was starting to grow quite nicely now she is back in our private field, the top part was starting to lay flat but the lower part was starting to catch up till a friend of ours got a lovely big mare who has gone in with them all nice but is now grooming the manes off again!!!

Have told our friend she's got to get a muzzle for her hahaha

I like a full mane and the cheeky look tho and pulled does look cheeky to me
