My dog has apparently got Mange under her chin, she has lost lots of hair, its scaly and in the beginning, smelt foul and wept a lot, she scratched it like mad until it bled, we cleaned it up with water and put antiseptic on it but has anyone else's dog had this?

You need to take the dog to the vets for this. It can make them feel very poorly and takes quite a bit of getting rid of if it really takes hold.

Give him a shot of ivermectin, be careful though, being a wormer it will clear them out, to put it politely! It'll clear the mange up in a few days.

ivermectin is very dangerous to certain breeds of dogs (eg. collies) and there are much safer ways of treating mange such as Stronghold and Advocate - both spot-ons applied to the back of the neck.

Some lotions/spot on/shampoos won't work, Ivomec will always work.

Never heard of it being dangerous and around here its used on alot of farm dogs, what are these side effects?

ivermectin can kill collies - they have an idiosyncratic reaction to it and it's extremely poisonous to them and their crosses. Spot-ons have always worked at killing mange in my experience and I've seen some pretty horrid cases of sarcoptic and demodectic mange. Only Stronghold and Advocate are licensed to kill mange mites though so using just any old product wont work. The only shampoo licensed is Aludex which is pretty horrible stuff - spot-ons are much more user-friendly.

personally i wouldn't and i know none of the others in my practice do - technically it's against the law as Ivomec is not licensed for the treatment of mange, whereas Advocate etc are and the presription cascade law requires us to always use a licensed product first. There have been vets investigated for professional misconduct for breaking the cascade, so I'll be sticking to the licensed treatments, collie or not.

My dog is a black cocker spaniel exactly like the one in your sig Widget! she has been to the vets i think, not sure what she came back with as i do not live at home full time. But my mum was the one to text me and say my dog had mange the poor girl (shes still young) and the dog groomer we use said that it would be from foxes or an allergic reaction...

Please DONT use Ivermectin in dogs

as vets we have to abide by a series of regulations called the Cascade...and Ivermectin is NOT a licensed product in dogs for treating mange.

As a few have already said - the spot-on treatments such as Advocate and Stronghold in my experience can help with mild or early cases of mange but Aludex i feel is the way forward.

Normal routine protocol in our practice is 4 x weekly baths in the shampoo... With skin scrapes prior to the 3rd and 4th treatments - i.e. you need to have 2 clear skin scrapes to say that the mange is cleared.

Hope everything goes well with his treatment
