I am having a horse vetted next week and if he passes that will have his sarcoids on his sheath banded. This treatment has been advised by my YO and several experienced horse owners.

The smaller sarcoid looks as if it is hanging off of the larger one which is the size of a marble. The larger one is stopping his penis fully retracting so that is causing me some concern.

This horse is perfect for me in every other respect but he is only 5 years old. Are these nodular sarcoids easier to treat than the flat ones? Have any of you heard of good results from banding? As it sounds as if it could cause him a great deal of pain.

I have never used banding, but when the pony got a marble shaped sarcoid under his eye when out on loan, they used aloe vera gel, which worked a treat. There are also some homeopathic remedies that are very good.
I have also used the cream from liverpool which the vet has to put on to great effect.
I have heard with banding that they sometimes come back.

Mine had these treated with a laser I would not band them . Be careful to keep them covered with a barrier cream when the flies start and cover all nicks and wound of other horse religiously to try to prevent spreading

Banding works v well IME - use proper castration rings as they have antiseptic in them.

He will feel it when it goes on but it's not agony, and only for a bit, so be careful in that area that you don't get kicked.
After it's on it shouldn't hurt him.

Ask the vet about the one on his penis though as I haven't banded one in such a delicate area before.

I would be surprised if he would pass a vetting if he can't fully retract his penis. Banding can work but you still have to treat where the root was in some cases to be sure of no return. Sarcoids are bloody frustrating things. After the job we have had to get one of the tbs right I would be slow to buy one with them. We operated several times to get one off this guys tendon and eventually we got it off and healed but it was horrible at times. He is now Sarcoids free and successfully racing but like I said last summer/autumn was difficult

please DO NOT PUT ALOE VERA on a sarcoid. aloe stimulates cell reproduction which is exactly what you do not want near any sarcoid tissue. banding works well on some sarcoids. talk to your vet who has seen these sarcoids.

I am not putting the band on I have booked the vet to do it. I have been warned that they could grow back. We would then have to repeat the treatment. I am sure the vet will sedate him as he came over from Ireland 3 weeks ago and is only now having handling every day. He has the temperament of a real gentleman although he is only 5. I am hoping that the sarcoids disappear but if they don't as long as his quality of life is not deteriorating we will continue to have fun.

I have had sarcoids banded on two of my young horses sheaths both sucessfully, one was done a year ago, havent had anything reappear and one was done in january this year, the sarcoid popped out as the vet eased the band down, so job done, all ok so far. Nodular sarcoids are generally easier to deal with, my vet said he would not have failed both my youngsters with nodular sarcoids on the sheath. having said that you do never know when they may pop up so price you are paying should reflect that.

We had a band put on one it did eventually drop off, but keeping the flies off it was a pain. We also used global herbs sarcex, so far it hasnt returned.
