Hi folks (oldie) newbie here.
Returning to horse owning after a few years off. Moved my new 17yo tb x Welsh mare into my yard a couple of weeks ago.
She is in a field next to a gelding pony. And they do seem to get on. The gelding always shouts to her and stomps about when she leaves the field!

She seems to have settled in the field fine. However I've tried to hack her out a couple of times on the road and she's gone totally berserk !
Spinning in the road, reining back at speed, shouting her head off and refusing to go past any field with horses in.
On the second hack she was jumping at every blade of grass and was really dangerous out on the roads, holding up traffic etc.
I'm a fairly good rider and not a novice, and I was calm at all times, no flapping!
She been fine in the school, with only a tiny bit of shouting.

I've only ever had geldings so mares are a mystery to me.

Should I try a calmer, mare herbs or just give her time to settle? I've no one to hack out with so it's up to me!
Any suggestions greatfully recieved ;)

Hi there,

It could be as shes new and in season everything is a major problem to her.
Could you try a little bit of inhand hacking and just take her a little further every day?

Our mare is on a supplement called "No More Mares" whether it helps or not who knows, but as she is newish to us Id rather have her on it than not (although its not cheap) what is with Equines!

Sorry not much help but good luck anyway

I here she's in season lol! I took my mare out today and she was a bit planty about leaving the group and then we had a lovely bareback ride across the moor. I let her pick the hedgerows for a bit and then we got to a gate where tw geldings stood. Well, she presented herself to them and was squirting everywhere making lots of noises. The gelding bit her butt hard but she still wanted more! She then planted again and it took me flipping ages for her t respond to my asking and moving down the hill and away from the geldings! Very Unlike her! My friends mare and gelding were making sweet hot love when she went down this mornin so there's definately love in the air!
