Im in a quandry... any advice is good advice at the moment.

I have a mare and foal (currently 9 weeks old and in brilliant health at the moment)
However- the foal was a suprise and im not experienced in anyform with them- my mare is unridable and before she gave birth was in a huge field just happily grazing away, shes a hardy live out 24/7 type but im worried the baby wont cope as she'll be only just 6 months come winter time?

What shall i do? shall i try and look for some livery stabling over winter for them? Im new to all this so i dont know if im being too overprotective?

Thankyou guys!

I was going to let weaning happen naturally as so far- everyhing else had. Noone has any idea my mare was in foal until about 3 weeks before she popped it out so niether of them had been given any extra supplements and currently both still havent as ive been away.
However, both are in impeccable health so currently its working for them.

My mare and her foal lived out all last winter. Neither of them had rugs on unless it was really really bad, which was for about 1 week. She was still feeding her foal till I seperated them in March this year when my foal was nearly 9months old.
Foals are touch cookies and will take a lot on so I dont think it will affect either of them to be truthful.

I have an 8 week old foal and another due at the end of August. All of my horses live out 24/7 and so do the foals, although I do have huge barns for them to go into if they want to.

All of my big horses are rugged and the foals likely will be too. Our temperatures are just a teensy bit chillier than yours over there; we go down to -30 Celsius, so darned cold! Our lot survive quite happily though.

The foal due at the end of August will definitely be rugged up so I don't see any issues arising - the big barns do get quite warm with all the horses inside them.

foals are pretty tough.by 6months i would expect she would live out fine with plenty of hay and some shelter(natural/man made)
weaning forcefully can take alot out of foals so it would probably be best fi she came in at night at least at first to see how she copes.some get very upset and loose weight.
my filly stayed on mum until she was around 10months.not done either any harm.
