Hi all,

I noticed my TB mare was bleeding from her back end today. The blood is very bright which suggests it's fresh blood and there were small pools of it all around her bed.
I've searched the internet for any ideas but can't really find anything. Her poo is quite hard and also very dark.
She's not off her food and is drinking plenty.

Has anyone else had this with their horse?

The vet has been called and is coming first thing in the morning.

Thanks in advance x

Hi,

Last year one of my mares started bleeding from here back end, there was blood in her tail and down her back legs and odd 'pools' around her stable, not loads of blood for a horse, but quite a bit! she went up to the vets after the failed to come to any conclusions at home and turns out she had a varicose vein in her vagina, which they cauterized and we haven't had any problems since.

Hope your mare is ok!

If this was a human you would probably just be constipated

If blood is bright and your poo is hard then it's usually just from straining (sorry to be so gross

) Hopefully all will be well

Varicose veins is exactly what I was thinking. Saw a mare just 3weeks ago with similar presentation - however this mare was pregnant and not due til this week.
Mare ( and foal) were fine though she foaled about 6 days early. Hope your girl gets a similar result. x

I'd go with the varicose veins too, one of our mares who was in foal started bleeding six weeks early and it turned out to be VV. she bled again later but has had no problem since.
No treatment was needed it just healed and then stopped.

Thankyou all for your replies.
My mare does indeed have a varicose vein inside her lady bits bless her.
The vet has advised that I just leave it to heal itself but if the bleeding hasn't ceased within a couple of weeks she'll come back out to cauterise it.

My girl has to have a few days off work which I'm sure will make her happy LOL.

Thanks again x

My mare had the same problem last year. Our vet suggested leaving it because she was confident that it would settle down, which it did.

We actually kept a diary and recorded roughly how much she had lost on a daily basis in case the problem either flared up again or didn't improve and we needed to call the vet out.
