Is there any way to reduce the amount of time a mare is in season for..

My daughters new pony has been in full season for ages with no signs of it ending.... she is smelly and her tail is minging, she flies round the field weeing at the same time and swishing and flicking her tail through the wee!!

Never had a mare before, so a bit in the dark about these things...

I know you can get supplements for the moody mares (she is perfect temperament wise) just wondered if there was one to stop the tarting about in the field, she is fine when ridden or stabled.

Sounds like she's got cysts on her ovaries. You'll need to get a vet to confirm the diagnosis, but if this is the case a course of 'Regumate' should resolve the problem, although it may take more than one course of treatment.

Thanks.... would there be any other symptoms?? She isnt moody or difficult to ride.. infact it seems only to be a problem when she is turned out (with 2 other mares next to a field of 5 geldings)

Not necessarily, altough the condition does often cause moodiness & unpredictability when being ridden.
It's fairly simple to diagnose, the vet will scan the ovaries via the rectum & if she does have ovarian cysts they should be visable.

All i would say as whilst this is technically 'winter' mares are coming into season now - presumably because of the mildness of the weather. Shouldnt be continuous though.........heaven preserve us!

It isnt that abnormal for mares to come into and stay in season as this time of year.
This is quite common when they are in the transistional stage.
A course of regumate should sort it out.
They are not neccesarily cysts which are actually quite uncommon but the fact that she has small follicles which are not producing enough progesterone to mature and ovulate as too early in the season.
So they sort of start to grow and then decrease again and another will do the same and so on.
Talk to vet they sometimes just say leave them but they may give you a course of regumate if it is starting to affect her re loosing weight or in distress.
