We have recently bought a 8 year old Warm blood mare and she has shown several behaviour problems which we think are hormone related. At first we thought she was in foal again as she had come from a stud and had the vet out. The results came back negative for pregnancy and testosterone but a slightly higher than normal level of inhibin. We had her scanned for ovarian tumours which came back as negative but also showed that she did not have any maturing folicles to be released at the next cycle?

As far as we can tell she has not been in season since we've had her 4 1/2 months now.

We know she was weaned last Oct. It just seems odd. Is this normal after foaling?

Any advice would be appreciated.

One scan means nothing in terms of follicles. A couple of mine have been PITA's this year - all have foals at foot. 2 weeks ago we scanned 3 - not a follicle over 10mm between them! One week later, scanned again, one had a 45mm follicle and was coming in - the other 2 still didn't have anything over 15mm.

A lot of mares have 'silent' cycles - you only spot them with a scan - or 20 minutes solid teasing with a stallion who doesn't give up. A few years back I scanned a mare for 40 minutes before she showed - we covered her that day! If my stallion wasn't SO good at spotting the 'interesting' ones, we'd have missed her.

If she's meant to be a riding horse, then thank your lucky stars she doesn't show in season! If you plan to breed, then either you'll need to scan regularly to pinpoint when she's coming in - or send her to a stud so she can be teased regularly.

one of my mares took 6 weeks to come back into season and even then it was fluke i spotted her!!! and its took about 15 mins of teasing to get any were!!! i have another though who comes in every two weeks, she wont travel as falls over in the strailer, rubs herself up on anything solid the stimulate herself!!!!
