I have a rescue horse and when I acquired her she had an awful absess in her right hind foot. This was treated by the farrier, he removed a portion of hoof and then I poulticed her for a few days until the pus discharge finally disappeared.

She appeared to be sound and I turned her out into the paddock and then last night I went to check her and both her hind legs were really filled!

I have cold hosed her and the vet gave me an antibiotic shot for her but I have honestly never seen this before!

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Sounds like a case of infection from a cut or cracked heals.. or lymphangitis, which would explain why both legs are swollen.. I dont think it would have anything to do with the abcess to be honest!]

sounds like lymphangitis...she may have it recurringly. do you have any history on her?? lots of walking will help get the swelling down and wash legs with hiibiscrub ad dry well. check and see are there any wee cuts or anything on her legs. adding epsom salts to her feed can help too.also get vet to check her heart as that kind of filling can be indicative of a circulatory problem. my mare had a very bad case of it about three years ago and through proper management it has never recurred. hope that helps...pm me if you have any more questions...i did copious amounts of research when dolly had it!!

If the horse has had a really bad abscess on one leg, the other hind leg is bound to swell after taking the strain.
My horse has an abscess that is taking forever to burst; bandaging both legs in the stable is giving him a bit of support and keeping the swelling down.
