Last night as i was chatting outside my mares stable, she grabbed the hook that holds her head collar and pulled back. She looked like she had something in her mouth, so i got hold of her and had a look.
She had blood everywhere, and this bottom front tooth in her mouth. Ive looked at it and it has one pointed (root?) on it but none on the other side? Would this be one of her adult teeth?- she is coming up 4.

Should i be concerned? She is eating fine.
Advise would be great.

Yes , best get a vet or EDT to look at it. Could easily get infected, and the other problem is that if it is an adult tooth, you'll need your EDT to regularly check that the opposite tooth is wearing down correctly.
The grinding action of the teeth against each other helps keep them in good shape partic if their diet includes plenty of grass.
Our mare has a missing tooth - as accident prone as yours sounds and our edt explained that the opposite tooth can get very sharp and painful.

I'd be calling the vet and/or EDT ASAP. If there is only one pointed bit on the tooth, the rest is probably still in her gum and will need removing before it gets infected.

It's probably an adult tooth - my youngster had most of his adult teeth by the time he was 4.

You don't say which bottom tooth it is, and it's hard to say without seeing the horse, but if there's an obvious gap, then it is probably an adult tooth.
I think you should call a vet experienced in dentistry and/or an EDT as soon as you can.
And remove the hook before you have to change her name to Gumsy.

Reading that made me cringe! I have to wonder that the tooth came out so easily, if it was an adult tooth then it sounds like the tooth was already loose (dead or infected?)which would have put her off food to an extent.

My friends mare caught her tooth while chewing the bailer twine she was tied out to, she yanked back various times before the tooth came out, blood was poring out her mouth and she was very distressed. It would not have come out with a small tug and definitely without a huge drama.

My girl fell on her nose (flat on her face) and put her top teeth through her top lip, her teeth stayed in (though one is slightly chipped) so adult teeth can clearly take a good yank/smack without coming out.

I would get a vet out in the next few days to have a look, if she's eating it can't be bad but as said before it could get infected or the root may still be in there.

Keep us posted!

Thank you all for the advise. She fairly pulled back on the metal hook, and from the blood i doubt it was ready too come out.
I have the tooth so can take a pic of it later if that will help? Had a quick look (as much as she would allow) and there seems too be some tooth/ or the missing root in the gap.

The tooth isnt very big tho? Its one just to one side of the central lower teeth, if that makes sense?

Should i get the vet or EDT?

I was hoping you would answer. Its not right in the middle its too one side slightly, i could show you on a digram?
She is not yet 4 if that makes a difference?
Its about the size of my thumb nail?

Thank you

Get her checked by a vet. Our 3 yr old did a similar thing last year except she fractured her mandible and displaced 3 teeth resulting in having to have her jaw wired for month. Hers were deciduous teeth but yours will be her permanant teeth.

Camera battery was dead tonight,

will do it in the morning and do another post, or pm you Victoria.

Thanks for replies will get vet/EDT once victoria takes a look at the pics.

My horse did this when he was 4 , and we washed it out with saeline (task and a half) and kept an eye on it. Another tooth grew in quite quickly!

You seem to be descibing her intermediates(the ones before her corners)If she is between 3 and 4 she may be just losing these and the root you describe is actually the new adult tooth coming through. Are you sure of her age ,was she a late foal and is she nearer 3 than 4?
It's impossible to say from your description without looking, but i wouldn't be too alarmed ,i have a good feeling that this could be a baby tooth that she has lost.Fingers crossed for you.
