Just a bit of background, it's a friends Morgan horse who she bred and broke herself. She's now 16/17yo and has a history of colic and laminitis. Owner is very keen on homeopathy and one year vets gave up hope with this mare and she treated her with homeopathy and she's still here today. She lives in a field around the back of owners house but no stableing what so ever, just a field. Owner rang us last night (we share her) saying she has laminitis and is showing signs of cushings :(
Any advice on helping her through it? Do we soak her hay or anything? Thanks x

She needs to see a vat asap. She will need pain relief and she should be immediately put in a stable with a really thick shavings bed.

Any case of laminitis, whether it's a first presentation or a chronic, should be treated as an emergency. The vet should be called immediately to give the appropriate treatment and advice re on-going care.

The pain caused by laminitis is similar to putting your foot in a vice and winding it up tightly...I don't think there are any homeopathy treatments that could give any relief to a horse in that degree of pain.

I would get vet asap to give painkillers , section off a small area as you have no stable , your farrier may be-able to use some frog supports to minimise rotation of the pedal bone but if she's foundered before this may be too late. I would also get her onto a branded low calorie haylege formulated for a lami i.e mark westaways blue and make sure you feed it from a small holed haynet or even one inside the other, oh and also weigh it out. You can tie a haynet in your outdoor patch by hammering in a post and having a tie up ring put on. I looked after a chronic lami sufferer out doors for several months but you do need to restrict even use electric fence if you think there will be a breakout . It all seems harsh but is vital you keep her off the grass.
