I think my 4yr old *might* have a problem with her seasons (have phoned vet - am waiting for them to phone back

)

We moved her to yard to be broken on 27th April, she was in season the day she went. Since then she's been in season twice more in the space of 4 weeks. Seems to be occurring when new horses arrive.

Anyone experienced this and what did you use to sort it out? I can't face a whole summer of this!!

My mare is exactly the same she is back in season for the scond time, the first was around the same time as yours. Unfortunatly haven't found anything to stop it yet. My vet couldn't really suggest anything. So i'll be interested to follow this post.

Yip I have two mares and they are both like this, they both come into season if they get a new horse in the field or next door. One of the boys got into their field and this brought them both into season. Changes to their routine can also bring them into season. My vet said if its a prob I could try regumarte or a marble.

Are you sure it is a season? Mares can wee and wink just to tell a strange horse they are NOT in season and therefore stay away!!

If a mare is coming into season more often than she should (ie outside of her normal cycle - about every 21 days, so 6 days oestrus & 15 days interval) then this is a sign that there may be something wrong.

sometimes it can be a sign of ovarian cysts and sometimes there may be a low level of endometritis (an infection) causing her to release more hormones than is necessary.

Of course, there are often exceptions to this, and in early spring & late summer mares seasons can be a bit erratic whilst they settle down into a cycle.

I would have a chat to the vet (as you are doing) as it may be worth scanning her to check there is no infection or issue there that is causing her to be in season.

For what it is worth the herbal remedies will do nothing to contol seasons, they will only have a (limited scientific evidence) effect on the mare's behaviour. Regumate WILL control seasons.

My mare has about 4 seasons in the space of 8 weeks at the start of the Spring and then settles down as the summer goes on: She's been worse this year as there are lots of new horses about including a feisty colt!

I just go with it as she's ridable: I just cant catch her so we leave a field safe head collar on for a couple of months.
