When I was riding my girl yesterday she was a bit lacklustre about using her back end, also a bit twitchy, swishing her tail and ears back occasionally. The yard I'm on doesn't have the best outdoor, it's a bit deep and doesn't get raked very often(no matter how much I nag!) so did wonder if it was due to this, it's particularly bad atm due to the weather and it hasn't been raked for even longer than usual.

Put her back in and she immediately started 'flirting' with my gelding next door. Turned them out later and she was all over him.
Came down to see them today and she's quite obviously in season, but when I was brushing her she was putting her ears back when I was brushing her flanks, I'm wondering if she's having 'period' pain issues? Ad thats why she was how she yesterday.
Do anyone else's mares go through this?
This is the first summer I have had her so don't know if this is the norm for her?

It's likely that she is.

My mare hates her sides being touched when in season, she gets moody, acts like a hussy.

I've not had her long but when she is in season now (the first couple of days when she seems sore), she won't have a saddle on her back. I'll walk her in hand for some gentle exercise.

Imagine if we had bad period pains and someone strapped something around our tummies - a fluffy bunny view :D but one I'm sticking to for my mare.

I've also put her on the moody mare mix from Natural Horse supplies. It's only been just over a week so I don't know if it's going to help with her next season which is due in about 2 weeks.

That's exactly what my girls like, she's being a total hussy and grumpy and moody when she's normally so movable. I think I will try some gentle lunging for a day or two see if she's the same by the weekend

My mare is more sensitive in her character when in season, and also very sensitive around her flanks. I put her on agnus castus this year as her first season was a nightmare and I didn't care to go through that again, and I doubt she did either! If she has mareish symptoms then we tend to have a chilled hack now. Nothing likely to ask big questions and not much in the way of schooling as her mind isn't in the right place to have a useful schooling session without arguments and grumps!!

Oh my god that's so freaking funny!!

TP- that sounds like a good idea, I wish we had somewhere to hack, just did 20 mins stretchy work with her and she was very good, so think the plan for tomorrow is a lunge
