a woman at my yard bought a horse she didnt realise was in foal untill i told her a few months ago.

the last few weeks she has dropped and bagged up both teets are full but she has just contacted me to tell me that shes seen blood on the vulva ive never experienced this in any of the horses ive bred.... should we be worrying or is this fairly normal

I would post this in 'Breeding' too if you haven't already.

I would be calling a lot of vets. It doesn't sound normal to me and I wouldn't want to risk the mare and the foal - I've seen things go wrong and they go wrong fast

its not bleeding bleeding its more of a thick bloody discharge thats just there im trying to get her to get the vet out but im in an awkward position it not being my horse

Don't want to frighten you but this happened to a mare of mine a few years ago and I was a first time breeder so when I rang the vet to tell her what I was seeing, she said it wasn't a problem. We later lost both mare and foal due to the foals head and neck being doubled back and she couldn't deliver him. Does she appear to be straining at all? In any case I would be getting a vet to her at once. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

It could be a varicose vein; they often burst with the pressure when mares are close to foaling. It could also be the mucus plug, sometimes it can take a few days for it to come out. I wouldn't be overly concerned at this stage providing the mare is in good health and her vitals are all normal. As with anything though, if you're not familiar with breeding and are worried about it, have your vet pop along and give her the once over.

As Spring Feather has said it could be the mucus plug coming away from the cervix. This is the plug that prevents infection to the womb during pregnancy so it's a sign that birth is not far away. Fresh thin blood requires vet attention.
