As some of you may know my mare went badly lame 3 weeks ago with what was thought to be a abcess "easy to treat you would think" I was actually relieved it was an abcess and nothing more serious.
After unsuccessfully trying to find the abcess the vet said to poultice for a week to see if it would work it,s way out, it did not so she advised having the farrier out for him to have a go, he came had a go and then said "if I was you I would shoe her and stop poulticing as I,m not convinced it is a abcess I think she is extremely foot sore and needs to come up off the ground".
So i rang my vet and told her what farrier had said and she agreed that it could be a bruise that is unable to heal due to the hard ground, so she was shoed yesterday.
She was not instantly sound after the shoes were put on has the farrier said she would favour the sore foot and she would be carefull about placing her feet untill she was sure the pain had gone. So this morning I went to fetch her empty bucket and she trotted up to me sound , the relief was unbelievable for me.
She is in foal and is due early August so it was just extra stress for me, it,s my first foal and I,m nervous about it without her being badly lame on top of that.
Thanks for all poulticing advice I am now an expert thanks to HHO, even though it was never going to heal her foot, I will know for the future if ever one of my horses do get an abcess I shall know what to do.
Best wishes The snoopster.
