I have a Cob mare 14 years old and never had this problem till we move yards. Shes a fizzy mare loves going forward and jumping but i find when shes coming into season, in season and the first few days coming out she really struggles and is uncomfortable sometimes even shows signs of a spasmodic colic, which has happened to her before from escaping into a large grassy field. Shes been checked and health wise she is 100% i do have the physio and saddle fitter coming to check thats all good as well but i was wondering if anyone knows of any supplements (the more natural i.e herbs the better) that will help her feel more comfortable but not lose her love for life....

for context the first 2 years i owned her she was on a traditional yard, lived in and out with one other mare during the day, she didnt have a hierarchy in the field she rarely saw geldings close to her apart from out hacking she has travelled with geldings, lived right next to them apart from them and this doesnt change her. She has now moved to a friends place (1 year now) and she lives out 24/7 (which she much prefers) but shes in a field with 2 other mares, one is more dominant then her and the other is the bottom of the pecking order, the dominant one and her are very attached, she is fine leaving shes not a nappy clingy horse but the other screams when shes away, and ive noticed my girl is now pretty much 24/7 in season, there is 2 geldings and a stallion on the yard but she has no interest in them she is only interested in her friends (the mares) and she lives quite far away from the boys, no contact at all.

My previous mare has bad seasons and she was on a herbal supplement and it helped her but i cant seem to find it anyone now!

If anyone has any tips and advice it would be much appreciated! one thing is she does not like living alone/being alone unless i am with her or shes tied up or working. shes always been that way so putting her in a paddock alone isnt an option.

Thanks in advance

Angus Casta I think is the supplement.

I would get your vet check there isn’t a reason for unusual seasons and they can recommend treatment.

Being in proximity of a stallion might explain it though.

okay great ill have a look into it!

I have had everything checked with the vet, even checked for ulcers and they said she is 100%

she doesnt seem to be bothered by him (stallion), even hacked with him a few times, its more when she goes hacking with the mares or the other little cobby gelding she is peeing all the time

I've had a mare similar to yours. She had bred a few foals though.

We put her on regimate and she was so much better. When she went out on loan and wasn't in close proximity to my stallion she didn't need it. You'd be surprised how much just being on a yard with a stallion can effect a sensitive mare.

When you say you have had everything checked, what has been checked? Has she had her ovaries scanned?

literally everything, from her teeth to her tail to her toes, she previously had a injury in her back hoof, so im in regular contact with my vet, they took bloods scans everything, everything is where is should be and working as it should be!

They did suggest regimate, it is something i am trying to avoid firstly i would rather try something more natural first, my old mare was a big fiery TB and the vet wanted me to put her on that but a herbal mix sorted her right out. she is doing okay at the moment, forward and happy, hoping that its the last of the season for this year and diving into the cold weather. It definitely is more of a spring/summer issue.

She is very hairy (big hairy feathers on her legs) so next step might be to take them off and maybe see if its her feathers annoying her and if there is scabs/itchy cuts, we did check for mites and she doesnt have any but she has become more stompy over the summer, i do wash and brush through her feathers a couple times a week but there is so much hair it is easy to miss! my heart just doesnt want to part with the feather and then she gets mud fever or something!

Vet has told you what would really help your mare . Mine got like yours at about 15 years old and after checking her ovaries and finding nothing really bad we put her on regumate . She was really happy on it and stayed on it for many years until she retired. The only thing you need to watch for it was hard work keeping her weight in check but not impossible.

she has a very bad colic last summer where we thought we were going to lose her, so i had everything checked after that, checked again a few months after she moved and then checked about 2

they suggested her to go on regumate, they dont not advise it was the best course of action for her thought. i have had many friends put there horses on it and it just numbed them out or had other things go wrong, last thing i was is her turning into a robot, she is happy at the moment as its colder weather so i would rather try something else first, which i have also discussed for the vet, if i listened to every word a vet said i wouldnt have got very far with any of my horses....she had an injury 2 years ago i was told she would never be ridden again and now she is in full work and competes and completely sound. the vet couldnt believe it....

It sounds to me as if it's the presence of the stallion. Of course she comes into season when she is with the mares, she is competing against them for his attention. If the vet has recommended Regumate, give it to her why wouldn't you? Until you try it you won't know how she reacts to it.

There are lots of things you can do, we use oestress and recently moved into agnus cactus as cheaper. Other mares I know have been on regumate, some sort of hormonal injection or even an implant to replicate pregnancy so stop the mare coming into season. The vet is your best bet at the moment. Need to be sure there isn’t something going on with the ovaries really
