I have a lovely conni mare, had her since she was 4 she now 15. Ever since Iv had her she has always been very flat and lazy come spring summer then goes back to being quite forward in the winter. She does have a few allergies in the summer. (she’s had ventipulim and even a nebuliser with steroids which makes absolutely no difference to her) I have battled this for years thinking it’s her allergies then to low-grade laminitis that nobody is picking up on.
Anyway my son now rides her and jumps her she has a cracking jump on her when she’s feeling well. Sometimes she can really jump and it’s powerful, other times she will jump but it just seems very flat low energy. So yesterday I rode her in the morning on a little hack and she felt amazing, my son had a lesson on her in the evening and she felt quite flat but she did have her grass glands up after she came in so we cut the lesson short and put it down to that.
My son went to a clear round tonight I left her in in the day off the grass with her Haylage. Her grass glands went down. Took her to the Clear round expecting her to be back on game and she was very flat. Some things I have noticed when she’s like this is she will often strike off in the wrong canter lead on the right rein and disunite in canter.
I did notice that I think she’s in season tonight as she was excessively weeing and winking (she’s never a moody mare very quiet calm mare) i’m actually thinking now after all these years of owning her that she actually has these issues when she’s in season. Could she be bloated? Do seasons cause bloat? ( she doesn’t look bloated) or have a bit of discomfort over her ovaries and just doesn’t want to use herself correctly to try and make it more comfortable for herself?
has anybody else ever experience this when the mare is in season? it’s kind of making sense to me a little bit because sometimes in the summer when I think she’s going to be lazy because of pollen she’s not. but maybe those days are just the part of her cycle where she’s not in season??
