hi all,
i posted last week about my lovely black velvet filly foal, also said was waiting on my 2nd mare to foal. have been up last few weeks 3 times a night watching her. was up other night at 2am, 4am, 5.30am she started, but i phoned vet as wasnt just happy, she is normally 100% foaling, but just had a feeling and vet came up, mare didnt seem happy foaling, vet had to pull it out, still wasnt coming so had to get what they use for calves. vet finally got foal out it was dead, but vet said foal was in right poisiton and mare was fine pushing away, it was just one of those things (nature). but i am So sorry for my mare as she is such a good dam, and always looks after foals great even when they are not her's she trys to adopt the others mares foals.
So vet injeted her with everything, pain relief, antibodics ect. kept an eye on mare for cleaning afterbirth, but it wasnt going injected her a few times to lose the afterbirth. still nothing, had to take her back to vets and get it removed, looked very sore. so she had a drip infusion to help release it ect. vet got it all out. but said womb could have a tire in it as it was very tight. he washed her out and give me injections to give her for a few days, she lost some blood this morning vet said this is normal, so injecting her and giving her pain relief twice aday. she seems to be ok, but abit sore, so keeping me eye on her 24/7. vet said he will check her womb in a few days again, i know will take time.
she's been through the mill, but she is so good, just fingers cross all will be ok. my heart just goes out to her. :(

i thought that straight away for foster foal as she would take on to any foal. but she is not just right yet. so want to focus on her and get her right. would love her to foster one but as it wasnt straight forward foaling, its best to let her heal and rest. thanks, hope foal does well, but dont want to chance her.

this is my mare breeze, pic taken few years ago.

I understand. Have passed on the the message in breeding, hopefully someone will be able to help them - if we can spread the word it can only increase the chances of finding a suitable foster mum. I do hope your Mare recovers soon.

thanks, would love to help as i know mare would love it. but just want to focus on her at min. where is foal as there is a few foster mums on donedeal.ie
i live in northern ireland.

Your Mare looks lovely - Fingers crossed for her recovery. Sounds like the foal has a potential foster Mum in hand.

How awful. Just heard from a friend on Facebook that a foal lost it's mum so they are looking for a mare to foster a one day old foal. I have told her to contact the national foaling bank. So sad

Sky, I am so sorry to hear this nature can be very cruel some times. Poor little foal, and your poor mare she really has been through the mill, I do hope that she recovers soon. Keep us informed of her progress, and you take care

so sorry about your mare and foal and fingers crossed that she makes a strong recovery.

if this is the one in Scotland they have found a mare and are going to get it and then see if they will bond.

The Black Isle Stud? - I saw the message on facebook & am just passing it on, don't know them personally.

My friends mare has gone to be the foster mum and for such a terrible time it has been a fabulous ending! The mare had a stillborn yesterday morning and the facebook from the black isle was passed on to my friend and she made the decision that she would like to help the orphan foal. The mare was picked up and travelled to the stud where she arrived at 2am and was introduced to the foal where she let him latch on and then cleaned him all over and they are now a happy mummy and baby. Sorry for hijacking your thread but I just feel its great at such sad times everyone tries to help each other.

thats great news, i'm glad she got a mum. i really wish i could foster a foal for my mares sake. but i think its important i focus on her at min. i am just in from giving her pain killers, she seems abit better, but i think its pain killers helping. hopefully will just take a few days but will take the womb a month or so to heal could be longer. will know when vet checks her. just want her back to normal and spoil he rotten as she deserves it. she is such a kind mare, always helping other foals and horses. sticks up for them and she doesnt allow bullying in her field she puts the bullys in there place when they try to bully the younger foals. she really is a great mare, so just worried sick for her, i know she is going to be fine i just know it. but it will just be tender loving care. thanks everyone for there well wiishes and i will keep you all updated on her. just love her to bits, my heart just goes out to her and her loss.
thanks again

so sorry about your mare and foal and fingers crossed that she makes a strong recovery.

So sorry to hear about your foal, my miniature mare had a still birth a fortnight ago today so know what you are going through. Hope your mare will be ok soon.

I am really sorry and so awful for you. Posts like yours should be pinned on the breeding board as mandatory for all the wide eyed people wanting to breed from their nothing special mare. I am not suggesting at all that this is the case with you but your post shows how it can go wrong for someone who knows what they are doing..

I was really keen on breeding from mine at one point and she ticked all the boxes, proven breeder, excellent competiton etc but I have a friend who does breed and over the years, have seen just how things can go so wrong, for seemingly no reason. She is highly experienced too. Decided my mare was too precious as a much loved pet to risk.

Hope your mare starts to recover shortly.

thanks a million everyone for good vibes, mare seems alot better today, grazing away. happy to see me, pain killers are doing the job and antibodics. vet said he will check her womb next week after another while healing. could take a month. but as long as she keeps improving, thats the main thing. just so happy to see her better in herself.

Luci07,
i know what you mean about people breeding and not having a clue what to expect. i have been in horses 18 years and breeding 16 years, have come across alot of things and in the 16 yrs, 2 foals was born dead (aborted) about 5 yrs ago different mares, then this one was born dead the other day. touch wood i have bred many many a healthy foal successful foal. but it is nature. you really do have to know what your doing and even the nature decides its fate, nothing a vet can do either. i agree 100% breeding isnt to be done lighty and not just because your mare is absent from work for a year or you really want a foal. everything has to work, the mares and sires breeding, conformation, temperament, structure, even there height has to be taken in to consideration, also you have to know what the market is looking for, and be prepared to keep foal if not sold or born with a fault ect. also it is big costs, apart from studs, scans, passports, feeding, when things go wrong. also foal handling foal health, mare health what to look out for. also to remember mares arent machines and give them a year or 2 off from breeding every so often. you have to do it for the love of the breed, you are breeding even when cross breeding, know whichs breeds work and which wont and not just willy nilly.

just really want to thank everyone for good vibes, thanks amillion.
