Evening all, I've had Ruby 3months now and all is going swimmingly well!! However she hates bring girthed up and according to previous owner who broke her in, she always has done. She turns to bite never gets you though or bites whatever is in her reach. Of course first thought was ulcers but she's always got and always had access to plenty of forage and displays no other signs and is more than happy to be groomed, washed off patted everything in the girth area just dislikes it being done up although no issues undoing. So problem or just grumpy girlie? Any suggestions of anything that may help are greatly received, I have thought about a girth sleeve, its not a huge issue to me but obviously not nice to think she may be uncomfortable :)

Exactly the same as what happened with our hanoverian mare she was rather fat and hated being girthed up and like yours turned as if to bite you but never did and then would bite the stable door; we found that every day stroking her on her girth area and giving her titbits whilst doing up the girth and prentending to do the girth up but then letting go has made her improve vastly, she still isnt perfect but is alot better than she was.

My pony hates having his girth done up to the extent that he would sit down or pass out occasionally in the end we had to get the vet out. What it is is under where the girth is they have a nerve that controls the diaphragm and the girth would pinch it. It gets particularly bad this time of year when he changes shape and has less fur to protect it! What I've found useful is a gel girth sleeve xx

It can help if you do up the girth one hole at a time and get her to move after each hole then stand square again. This is not a solution but may make it easier

My guy doesn't like his girth being done up, I bought one of the shires 'fleece' lined ones but although it has sorted my boy out I am not fond as it gets very grubby and I haven't worked out the best way of cleaning it yet!
