Hi all, posting this in the hopes someone has experienced something similar as tbh aside from putting her shoes back on I'm stumped as to what might help.

Mare is 13 years old and before I bought her in October had spent most of her life as a broodmare and barefoot until she was brought back into work in August. She was fully shod all round when I got her, but I decided [possibly foolishly] mid November to take the backs off and see how she went with a view to taking the fronts off too. All was well 'til last week when she became sore on her hinds on stony ground :-(

There's no smell, so I don't think it's thrush but surely if it was entirely down to being barefoot she'd have become sore sooner??

Had thought about it, so many different ones though! Anyone point me in the right direction for some good ones?

Depending on your budget, I can recommend the equine fusions, I put these on my boys hinds when he needs them! They stay on and don,t twist, nice and light just like "trainers" he positively bounces along in them!!

I have taken my boy barefoot recently and not only is he a bit footy on gravel which is unavoidable but we have taken off 3 front shoes in two weeks!!!

I must admit I know you have to give these things time but im so tempted just to shoe allround again already :o

how long had the mare had shoes on for?

It is not unusual for them to become a bit footy after a few weeks bare as the foot seems to 'wake up' a bit and become more sensitive.

Of course it takes time for unhealthy hooves to become healthy again. If you do decide to shoe again, your horse will just have shod unhealthy hooves.

OP - has anything changed diet/turnout wise? Perhaps she's bruised her sole? How is she being trimmed? Ditto what others have said about using hoof boots, can recommend Easyboots.

She was only shod to be brought into work in August, hence why I thought taking the backs off would be ok :-( Talked to farrier today and decided to pop them back and try for barefoot again in summer as our fields are quagmires at the moment.
