last week (thursday) i started giving soph a half bed as she has thick rubber mats in her stable .I use aquamax and she has not peed in the stable since. The bed covers one mat which is 6 x 4 so she has plenty of room to pee without it splashing up her legs! It's fine by me that she doesn't pee in there as its much cleaner etc but surely holding it for 16 hours can't be doing her any good. Anybody any advice as to why she is doing this?

i'm pretty sure she is nick as she is fine in herself otherwise. Obviously i don't sit up there all day watching her so can't guarentee that she is ! maybe i should do what one of my very old YO used to do and whistle at her, bucket in hand til she pee's

I'll stick another bag of pellets in and see if a thicker bed will get her going again.

I have a Sophie as well and she has also practically stopped peeing in her stable. I have seen her wee in the field and she is eating and drinking fine so am not too worried. As you say she hasn't needed any fresh shavings for over 2 weeks now!!

The reason your mare is not peeing in the stable is because she does not have enough bedding to feel able to pee. Very common with mares on rubber matting with smallish beds. I know it makes life easier for you but is not at all good for her to have to hold it sooo long. Increase the bedding so she starts to pee again and you will have a much happier healthier horse!

Lulup that would not explain why my mare isn't weeing. I haven't changed her bed in any way and she has a lovely thick shavings bed.

My girl lives out and has a field shelter that I make into a little stable for her. In the summer she just has her rubber mats in there and she doesn't pee. In the winter she has a couple of bags of shavings in there to make it a bit cosier and she will come in from the field, have a pee and go back out again!!! Maybe more pellets will help??

i have a mare who is in foal and on a shavings bed i have had her for 3 years and is stabled at night all year round and has never peed in her stable. the only time she will pee in her stable is when she is kept in during the day and only pees when i skip her out so i just get her to pee in a bucket. she also poo's in the one corner very clean little horse. when she gets put out in the morning she also goes to the one bit in the feild and has a pee very strange animal lol

I have two welsh geldings, neither will pee in their stables, they both have big full beds! We have to take them outside onto grass to pee them last thing at night before we go to bed.

It makes bedding last forever, at first we thought it was so odd, but now we have got used to it and have a routine it actually is great (except when the wind and rain is lashing and you're out in the field in the pitch black whistling)

Also pee them before the farrier and before rides too if its past one in the afternoon! They're fairly regular.. hahaha

My daughters mare is very clean, piles the poo in the corner and will only pee in the stable if she is kept in longer than usual. Her brother is a real dirty sod!! (the ponys brother, not my daughters!)
