Mare swollen teats - hormonal or veterinary issue?

Hi there. Sorry for the long post but I’ve had my cob just over 4 years now and I’ve noticed some changes in her recently and wondered if anyone else has experienced something similar. She’s always had large teats (no photos but I’d say about 3”) they’ve always been full of fluid. Clear/milky. Bets always said they’re normal. She’s always been ok with them being touched as she needs them cleaned regularly due to dirt build up in between them. Actually enjoys it. But only when tied up or she’ll run circles around the stable.

last week I noticed she was a little twitchy when brushing her belly so had a look and her teats were swollen larger than usual, the area in front slightly swollen and around the side of the left teat also swollen (maybe milk vein?)

They are slightly warm but not hot, the discharge milked out is the usual milky watery fluid. No sign of infection. She doesn’t seem to be in pain, a little discomfort but still allowing me to touch them.

she seemed ok in herself and has occasionally swollen up in the summer. So I was just going to keep an eye for a few days but no improvement.

she is usually a really friendly, loving mare now in the last few days her mood seems to have dropped and she’s quiet and grumpy, actually nipped me few times and she’s never been a biter. Good appetite still, eating all food. Tpr all normal.

Another thing, she’s always been very clean in the stable. One or two pee’s at most. The past few weeks, before the swelling and mood change. Her stable has really wet strong smelling, to the point shavings are turning red overnight. She only wees in one spot so it it’s hard to monitor how many. She’s always been one to hold her pee until she’s in a comfortable place. So at first I though with all the rain and mud she was just holding until she got in the stable. But with the smell and pungency becoming worse I’m thinking something more.

sorry if this has been asked 100s of times already. The only answers I can seem to find are related to clover. But does this just seem hormonal or something more. I am planning on speaking to a vet. Just wanted some options. If hormonal do you have any suggestions of supplements to help calm them? Or any vet treatments you’ve gone through.

thank you!!!!

Mine had swollen teats due and clear fluid to a change of field (no clover though) and lack of movement due to being quarantined. I gave a course of bute as an anti inflammatory and it cleared up slowly over a couple of weeks. She didn’t mind me touching them but she’s pretty good about most things.

How old is your mare? It might be worth a Cushings test if she’s in her teens as I understand that, along with the weeing, it can be a symptom.

I know swelling and fluid is quite common, its the wee and mood changes combined which has worried me. I have checked morning and night also thinking it could be worse in the morning due to being in. But it didn’t seem to effect.
She’s been in the same field for a few months now and there’s barely any grass never mind clover. Also checked her feed for soya which I heard can effect fluid. Should have said her age, she’s only 7 so wouldn’t think cushings is likely.
Don’t know if I’m just overthinking

Is she overweight? My mares boobies will leak if they are too fat and if I get the weight down they stop.

the behaviour change could be a season coming on or fed up etc hard to know really.
