I do not know what is going on with my mare. When another horse enters the yard. She arches her neck and starts rearing at the door flaring nostrils etc as a stallions would. Any ideas what this is all about? Similarly if something spooks her she snorts like mad and prances

aww bless your gender confused horsey! i have no idea what you could do about it- maybe she's *whispers* gay! if it helps i have a gelding who thinks he's a mare and sticks his tail up at new geldings, and squeels and stamps his front hoof alot!

That makes me feel so much better that you have a confused gelding. She def has no testicles hanging down PMSL

Years ago when my 1st mare went to stud she not only rounded up the mares but mounted them!! She was fine after a hormone injection & then once she was in-foal & foaled never happened again.

Sienna is like this also I wouldn't worry. She definitely prefers the girls and does a very critable stallion impression, stamping her front feet and generally looking like a boy!!
I don't think she likes the guys which is a bit of a worry when she's supposed to be put in foal this Spr

Don't worry... my mare who is in foal at the moment could be a bit like that in her first few seasons of the year (including the snorting, the arching her neck but she didn't rear because she never has done). However, I did know a horse who used to be like this all of the time, and it was discovered she had something wrong with one of her ovaries, and needed treatment. She would try to mount you when she was in season if she could smell a gelding on you... very bizarre!

I had a mare on loan once that used to mount other horses in the field!!

She was previously used as a broodmare for 3 years so presume she was ummm, getting a little frustrated??

mine behave like that far more stallionesk behavior than mareish arched neck nickering rounding up as yet not seen her mount any though! mind you she is quite mareish too comes in to season more offten than should and then a complete tart when in season- think a little confused!!

A mare on our yard went as far as mounting her friends during the early stages of her pregnancy! She was also very protective of them and broke a few fence rails warding off the horses in the next field! She calmed down eventually.

A yearling gelding also mimicked some of the mares and started showing the other geldings his bum!

Hello,

My mare was exactly the same. V protective towards my other mare & would try to mount her & not let anyone else near her, lots of 'stallion type' aggressive behaviour eg biting & kicking, rearing when being led...

First vets made me feel totally stupid & said it was 'high spirits' (as if I didn't feel stupid enough already phoning up to complain about a lesbian horse). 2nd vets took one look, said 'that's not normal', scanned her & found a huge ovarian cyst. One ovary was HUGE & the other one had shrivelled up & so wasn't producing any 'girl' hormones.

She had surgery to get it removed - it was the size of a football & weighed 15lbs!! 6 weeks later, all the behavioural probs vanished cos the other ovary woke up & started doing its job. But then she also lost the aggression to jump assertively & turned into a plod, so I eventually sold her.

Hope this helps.
