Please help I am totally freaking out..my maiden mare has waxed up at 300 days of gestation.I have had my vet out and he is at a loss as to why.Has anyone had an experience like this? Does waxing up always mean that foaling is imminent? If my foal is born 300 days early is it likely to survive?I would love some advice as I am worried sick.......................

Put this in breeding too. Do you have a picture of her udder? Is she bagged up as well as waxed up? What colour is the wax? No I'm afraid a foal born at 300 days would be extremely unlikely to survive as its not properly developed. What did your vet say/do when he came out? Im unsure of times between waxing up and foaling but know that it does differ but 300 days seems very early.

Thanks for the reply..he said he wasnt sure why.He gave her some antibiotics incase of infection. He also scanned her and said the foal was still alive and her cervix is tight. But that was it.She is bagged up but she's not running milk. The wax has been there for about three days. Its a nightmare as I had planned to send her to stud for foaling but she's at home and I am totally un prepared.

Depending on what the wax looked like, my mare (maiden) developed greyish visible plugs at 318 days and gave birth at 340 days, she went from greyish plugs to amber/translucent plugs to white wax beads (the white ones appeared about 3 days before birth) I have heard about arabian pregnancies giving birth at 306 days and foal survived but I think % is low at that stage. Good luck

Try not to panic! Is she def 300 days or is it possible shes later? your previous post said you werent aware she was in foal when you bought? Competitiondiva's mare doesnt sound like she gave signs by the book either! What does the wax look like? What colour is milk when expressed?

What covering dates were you given? Did she take at the first service or did she come back initially with a negative scan.

Sometimes - though it's rare they can be in foal and it's missed at scanning and they still accept the stallion, though already just in foal. If so then she may be 21 days further on in her pregnancy than was thought.

I've noticed that the wax comes and goes for sometime before foaling - one of mine gets you all excited then takes another couple of weeks before producing baby.

Keep your fingers crossed that she will continue and ask her to cross her legs too.

may i say
even tho a lot of people say that waxing it a indictation that foaling is imminent its still not a clear one as many mares can wax weeks before foaling
so dont panic just yet
