My 6 year old mare has gone slightly "off" in her work over the last few weeks, i have had some straightness problems, and signs of increased salivation, with a tendancy to play with the left hand side of the bit when standing still - (she will stretch right round to the left and almost try to slide the bit ring on the left hand side into her mouth.) She is currently ridden in a hanging cheek snaffle with a french link, which has seemed to suit her well upto press. This morning I examined her carefully and have found one small hard lump on the left upper bar in her mouth in about the place where you would expect to find a tush. It does look as though it is too far forward to be affected by the bit, but to be on the safe side i have decided to leave off working her for a few days and get her checked by an EDT (teeth were due to be done soon anyway).
I have looked around online and keep reading that the tush shouldn't be affected by the bit and there is usually not a problem, but I am curious to know if anyone else has any experience of a mare cutting a tush, and if this has had much (if any) affect on the horses work. She is usually a lovely sweet natured mare, but she has been displaying some "attitude" in her work recently and I am wondering if some tenderness in her mouth could still be causing a distraction, even if it's not directly affected by the actual action of the bit itself.
