Hi there,
My old girl had a foal five yrs ago now and ever since she has become obsessed with me scratching / rubbing her teats !! Sorry about this everyone !! lol.
She has has mastitis once or twice since that i have had treated by the vet. Anyway i was thinking about this today and thought i would ask you advice/ opinions... Its worse during the summer with flys etc but its constant all yr. She nudges me in that direction and lifts her back leg !! I wash the area regularly with hibiscrub and often massage in aloe vera or sudocrem if there are flys.
Anyway any idea if this has just become a habit she enjoys or could there be something i dont know about?
I would be interested to hear your opinions or if you have a mare that does the same?
Thanks guys x

hi, i had a foal once that wouldnt let me or anyone touch her when i got her 1st. but she started to back in to me and i would scratch he tail and legs and she loved it. she started doing it all the time and finally got her all handled, anyway she is 4 yr old now and backs up to u in a field or anywhere and wants her scratch, my friend thought she was going to do her in one time when she backed my friend in to connor, i told her to scratch her and she did and mare turned round as if to say thanks, we have tried to get this out if her but she is a very quiet kind mare and still does it everyso often, but i ignore her now as it is a bad habbit, so if chase her on and then scratch her on face to take her away from that bad habbit.
sorry long post but had to tell my story :)

Hibiscrub is very drying and sudocreme can become a little irritating to delicate skin if used for a while. I would give her a good wash, then put on some aqueous cream (v cheap from the chemist, not used for anything dodgy!) just to put some moisure back there. As a maintenence thing I wouldn't use hibiscrub there. If she needs a wash then I would just use a warm sponge or a very dilute gentle shampoo. If her skin is dry then it probably makes her quite itchy. OH mare tends to be really troubled by flys around her teats in the summer. Usually fly spray is good enough, but if the flys are really bad then she has sudocreme on then for it and some summer fly cream. It is washed off each week and then aqueous cream put on so she is more comfy. Flys are such a ****.

All my mares have been like this. They cant scratch there themselves so I made a point of doing it for them and along the underside of the belly as well.
Geldings also appreciate a little scratch!

I have a mare that has never foaled that is the same; she will chase people around the paddock presenting her quarters and lifting a leg for a scratch, and then does a peculiar stance like a peeing dog when she does get a scratch.

I've tried cleaning etc, but it's never really solved the problem.

Interesting ill try the aqueous cream ..i think thats how you spell it !!
I think its just become a very obsessive habit !!
interesting to hear your stories

Touchstone your mare sounds very similar to mine !!
Its becoming so bad i was worrying she may have an underlying problem !
