Hi, this might seem like a strange question.... but my 7yr old warmblood mare doesn't seem to realise that she can pee whilst being ridden or being in the trailer etc. As soon as we get back from anywhere, she goes straight into the stable and has a pee. I worry because I am going to start competing her soon and am anxious that her being desperate to wee could affect her perfomance! Any tips on what I can do??

I have a gelding who is similar. Apparently, if you whistle every time you catch her having a wee then she will gradually associate the whistle with having a wee and you should be able to encourage her to wee when out by whistling.

This has never worked with my lad though but then it was very difficult to catch him in the act when he is in the stable. He will however now go when he is desperate at an event or out hunting. He still won't go whilst on the lorry though.

Bertie is the same. He will go in his stable but only if his bed is down deep enough. I've had him for 14 years and he's never been when being ridden/tacked up. Last week he had to be stabled during the day, and for some reason wouldn't go even though his bed was down. As soon as I turned him back out in the field the first thing he did was have a really big wee. During the winter, he has a wee first thing in the morning as soon as you put his haynet in his stable. He makes me laugh

Mine will wee out hunting but won't do it at competitions unless I book a day stable for her (which I do whenever I can, largely for this purpose because I worry about her!)

I've had four mares and not one of them has pee'd whilst being ridden. The only time it has happened was when I was hacking home after a very long ride. She dropped to her knees and I jumped off thinking she was dying! She jumped straight back up, had a long pee and accompanying groan, then stood looking at me. I hopped back on and we carried on home.

If your mare is really desperate she will let you know! I don't think many horses are too keen to wee in boxes and trailers because of splashback.

Mine wont pee either when being ridden . When she's out in the field she very rarely pee's either . I go to catch her and she dithers ... trundles off and sort of squats to do a pee then decides no she'll come in for a pee , then .... no I'll do it outside ... no I'll come in AARRGGHH ! Then she'll decide , I'll come in by which time she's legs crossed and we have to come in smartish so she can scoot into the stable and pee and aaaarrrrhhhhh/groan ! I tell her if she came in straight away we wouldnt have this rush ... but no... we have to do it her way !

Haha aren't horses funny :) Well, glad to hear that my horse isn't the only one, but still feel sorry for her as it must be really uncomfortable! I've tried putting shavings down in the trailer to encourage her to wee in there if she needs to, but it didn't seem to work.

She is a bit of a stress head, so I wonder if she feels vulnerable about peeing whilst out.

My daughters eventer would not pee away from home unless stabled, it was a real problem as sometimes it was clear he needed to go but just wouldn't and it affected his performance. We never solved the problem unfortunately! Her other eventer peed as soon as he was put on the lorry to go anywhere, out of excitement, i guess. Me, being old, will pee anytime anywhere!

My old mare wouldn't pee ever out on a hack, she would hold on until she got home, infact, she was even fussy about where she would poo!! My present mare will pee on command!!
