My mare is due around 17th July. She is not actually bagging up or running milk and her teats are nice and soft - but the surrounding area is very hard to the touch. Is this normal for her stage of pregnancy ???

Hi My mare is not suppose to be due untill the 10th Aug, but to day she has started runing milk, i am quite concerned, i hoping everthing is going to be ok.

If her due date is correct, then you need to do more than hope!! This is a possible symptom of impending abortion and you need to speak to your vet sooner rather than later. There are two common causes of abortion in late pregnancy - one is twins and you can't do much about that at this stage; the other is placentitis and speedy treatment is absolutely essential!! I hope I'm wrong - but speak to your vet NOW!

You may also need to think about obtaining a colostrum replacement for your foal if things continue. That or anticipate the foal requiring a plasma transfusion shortly after birth to boost the IgG levels for immunity.

Your vet will advise you about this when he visits to look at your mare.

My fingers are crossed for you at this worrying time. My old mare did this and still gave birth to a lovely filly which needed the plasma transfusion but she is now 9 years old and in foal herself this year. Good luck and let us know what the vet says.

if you are concerned, as always consult with a vet. Shes due on the 17th July? thats four weeks away so still has plenty of time to start filling. Is she a maiden? Some mares don't bag up at all till a few days prior to foaling, some maidens show swelling at the fore of the actual bag rather than the bag itself, some don't bag up until after foaling, one of our maidens did this this year.. and others have done the same in previous years.

The surrounding area of the mares udders is firm to the touch, the adomen of the mare is generally very tight and firm.

If abortion was pending you may also see other normal pre foaling symptoms such acting collicy, off her feed, moving away from other horses, slackening of the tail area and hind quaters, could wax up and bag up ...........

keep us posted........

Just to clarify as responses are getting a bit mixed up on this thread.

wonkey_donkey - your mare is perfectly normal (well as normal as any foaling mare is!) The udder is often tight and hard before the mare lets her milk down - she may also have softer swellings in front of the bag.

But grace123's mare is NOT normal. Running milk is almost always a sign that foaling is imminent - and if a mare does it weeks/months in advance of her due date it OFTEN signals that the mare is about to abort. Depending on the cause of the problem - and speed of treatment - it may still be ok but NO time to delay calling the vet!

oh dear, hadn't read the post in flat mode... hadnt realised there were tow mares being discussed here, doesn't sound to good

I had all ready spoken to the vet and she had checked her and told me to just keep an eye on her which i did, she foaled twins on sat nite, i was gutted 1 born dead the other 1 was so weak i bottled fed it every hour but 2days after she died it was vey sad, my mare is doing really well,

I am annoyed with the vet this should of being picked up on the scanning, gutted.

Very sorry to hear that grace123 - what a heartbreaking experience for you. I have a lot of mares that twin regularly and my vet is incredibly careful and has never missed picking them up - but it still worries me just in case it happens! Sadly, there's nothing you could have done to prevent the outcome. Glad to hear your mare is ok.
