I am after some advice please. I originally had 2 mares and then gelding 1 came along in December who joined them no problem. I have now got gelding 2 - arrived day before yesterday and I put him in field next door - intention is to put both boys together and both girls together. Boys got on like a house on fire over fence and were even grooming each other - wonderful! I got home yesterday to find gelding 2 in with others but some distance apart. By the time I got to field Gelding 1 was chasing off the new boy like a demon possessed clearly not liking anyone near his mares :(. So I put G1 in his own paddock next to G2 in his own paddock and girls together. My question is do you you think he will act like that if I put him in with G2 later today. Do you think it was only because G2 had entered his field with his girls. Should I add G1 to G2 field??? Sorry if this all sounds confusing but I am not sure what the herd etiquette should be. G1 is usually a big softie and when I shouted at him - turned back to me with pricked ears as though butter wouldnt melt. He is currently grazing near the new boy with no signs of agression and girls are off in far corner of their field. G2 is too a big softie and I thought they would really hit it off together as it seemed at first.

It is probably a protective thing and as long as he was just chasing, not cornering and beating the carp out of, I wouldn't worry too much. I would leave them in their own fields for a few days then intorduce them when you are there for the day to keep an eye.
