Hi everyone,

I have a 6year old tb mare and the person that I bought her off tried putting her in foal but she got an infection.

Now I had her last year and her season was so heavy, Shes not really a stroppy mare.

Now she came into season on Tuesday and she just seems really under the weather .. That may sound silly but she has this tired look in her eye and just not being herself at the moment.

I can't tell if it's a heavy season yet but has started off light.

I'm just wondering if there is anything that I can give her to help I'm thinking some sort of primrose tea and I was going to put her on magic as she needs a calmer so I was thinking of some sort of primrose/lavender tea? Can I do that?

Any suggestions? If no luck then I will ring and ask for advice from my vet .. They know my mare extremely well so will be able to offer advice ..

But just wondering if there's anything that I can try first?

Hi there, I've been looking into things to regulate my mare as she's also just coming into season and had some behavioural problems with her last year. I'm looking at the various possibilities and from what I've read - if you're going to give an oral food/calmer supplement you need to allow it to build up in the system over a few weeks before you'll see any sign of improvement so the sooner you start the better. If you're looking for an instant effect, I have been recommended Regu-mate which I believe you can only get from a vet but it is very effective though a little costly.
Hope you find a solution soon and your mare feels better. Good Luck.

I've not heard a mare's seasons being described as light or heavy before.

What is it that you see that allows you to say they are light or heavy?

Thanks.

Sarah

Just wanted to add, the reason I ask is that I wondered whether you meant she had a discharge from her vagina? In which case, that would be abnormal and would definitely warrant the vet taking a look in case it's another uterine infection.

Other than that, with you saying she doesn't seem her normal self, it's definitely worth taking temperature and pulse so you can gauge whether there's anything there to indicate illness.

Thank you for the replies, at the moment I'm looking at a supplement and have been recommended global herbs frisky mare and orstress .. But not sure what one to go for if either of them..

She doesn't have discharge coming out.. I Think I used the wrong word saying heavy ..

Just when she was squirting last year it was all so thick and quite dark coloured.. My previous mare didn't have seasons like maisie does that's why I termed it "heavy" as it's heavier then what my mares have had.

Sorry for the confusion! Trying my best to explain it all but finding it difficult :(

Danielledanielle: where do you get yours from? Think I'm going to have to go into tack shop next week and read through them all lol

try the website naturalhorsesupplies.co.uk for all sorts of supplements. They do a specific mare calmer and individual herbs and minerals. It is very interesting to read though. Most calmers for mares hormones contain agnus castus, valerian, raspberry, and chamomile and maybe magnesium.
