help i am not very knowledgeable about mares in season as i have never had a difficult one in facet i have only ever had 3 mares!! and so not sure about cycles etc i took the mare i look after hunting yesterday and she was a cranky old bat even though up until now the owners have said she has gone beautifully and she has been a star and she has plenty of energy but not naughty etc all the things i want to hear! but yesterday she was flying forward when a hound came behind her and getting really clingy when the other horse moved and just being difficult . so can anyone tell me is the first day they come into season the worst or is it like us with pmt !! how long are they in season for ? could she be in season ? she is very wet at the moment? and before anyone says it saddle is checked regularly and so is her back and her teeth were done 2 weeks ago and i am quite aware of the spring grass! i have also just rode her down the road and she was an angel!!! thanks

my mare is evil when she is in season(shes grumpy anyway) i dont ride her at all when she is, but thats just me she dosnt go well, hates to be brushed touched etc,my mare "winks"at everything in sight and will even be friendly with the little filly we have.

This would be my mastermind subject of choice if only any 2 mares were the same !!

I get 2 AMAZING days out of my mare just before she comes in - Thats when I know what is due to come - they can get vey sensative just behind the saddle area when ovulating ( you may know this feeling yourself) Jumping could aggrivate this more than a pootle down the lane, Also if you think of how your hormones effect you then this may explain her clingly spratty behaviour yesterday. This could just be the begining of her 1st spring season - you will know when she is full blown when she starts to flirt with the wall !

My mare seasons all year round be her behaviour is worse during spring time and settles down July August time

Like I say each of us are different and so are they, you will just have to get to know her cycle as you know your own

Magnisium and camomile have been found to help Lina

is it possible for them no to be particularly sore though ? we didn't do any jumping yesterday or anything much to be quite honest she was just a bit fidgety and silly . she is hunting fit and on competition mix and stay[power nuts although not a lot of that!1 so i did make sure she had a good canter but this didn't really help but like people some people its obviously the time of the month and some people you never know!! i have another mare and i have never noticed when she is in season as it doesn't seem to bother her??? am very confused i appreciate all horses are different !!!

It is more of a tenderness really and that is when they are ovulating so if she's bang in season today it may have settled mark it on the callender and keep your eye on her.

.... did I mention the sping grass ??? lol ;-P

Hi, My mare just finished her season and now she like a donkey, and so kind, but usually a week before her season she is evil, tries to bite cow kicks won't be groomed and mardy as hell (but when i come to think of it i was a bit like that with PMT) The positive thing is she rides very well all the time so being in season doesn't affect her behaviour when ridden.
She also has seasons all the year round. I use stroppy mare on her and there is extra Magnesium in her pony nuts so hopefully that makes her a little calmer.

One of my mares has just gone out of season, it is very obviously when she is in season her back legs have springs and even if a breathe of air goes past her back end it gets double barrelled, so basically she spends a week with her back legs springing up constantly, so no i dont bother to ride her.
Now i have another mare coming into season and she just wants to kill any horse that comes near herbut loves people.
Another one you would never know when she is in season by hertemperment but she gets the runs.
There that is just 3 of my mares and it show how completely different mares are when in season

My two are in their 2nd week of it. They have become inseperable which is a real pain and are constantly peeing over each other which is gross! One of them is being abit naughty whilst being ridden but nothing dramatic thankgod just lack of concentration. Someone told me they were in it for 3 weeks so hopefully i only have 1 more week of it! lol

My mare gets very clingy and stressed during her seasons, seems to be constantly on the look out for something. she actually becomes more like a donkey to ride and really backs off the leg so I tend to lunge her during this period.

This is my first and last mare. Never again!! Allthough I love her to bits and find her hugely rewarding in most cases, the rest of the time my patiences is severely tested.

Someone was wrong! A mare normally ovulates every 21 days - she is in season for 5-7 days before ovulating and goes out very soon afterwards (24 hours would be average.)

If your two have BOTH been in season for two weeks they are probably transitional (seasons at the start - and end) of the breeding 'year' can be longer (or shorter) and more intense than during the main breeding season.

so could i be right in thinking that she was in season and shes ok with that then the day i took her hunting she was ovulating and the next day she was fine which would be the 24 hours?? that would make sense to me does it to you??
