I have a 14 yo mare that has had two foals and been off for 5 years until a few months ago. She is now kept with 3 geldings (on her own before) and has started sj again very sucessfully. However, today she was a minx. We were eliminated in a 2ft 6" warm up class! She did not concentrate and looked like she should not have been there! She is on day 3 of her "heat" and is randy as hell! Would this affect her? I have only competed geldings before so this is all new to me! Advice please!

Hi and welcome to the world of mares!!!!! :D

All mares can differ during their seasons. My current mare is a bit of a nightmare during her season with no concentration and screaming her head off all the time whilst working, so much so that sometimes it is just better to leave her in the field rather than try and do anything with her!!! We are not competing yet this year so no need to worry about it as I see it at the moment. Whereas other mares I have had you sometimes wouldn't even know they were in season no change of temperament or anything.

If you are looking to compete regularly it may be worth having a chat with your vet re putting her on regumate which often helps, although would ask about porcine regumate rather than equine as it is exactly the same stuff but about £50 cheaper!!!! Or another option which seems to have good results is having a marble inserted, again talk to your vet re this. :)
