I don't know much about using regumate - I am looking at a mare to buy and she gets very mareish when in season apparently, so her owner uses regumate from spring to autumn - would this put you off buying the mare?

If she's good in all other ways, no, but I have no patience for moody mares

she sounds perfect in all other ways, yes, which is why I am considering the idea - but the thought of a potential moody nutter for half of the year worries me a bit!

I only know one mare that is on regumate and they are trying to sell her , I personally wouldn't touch her but she's a bit of a wack job anyway

It wouldn't put me off, as I always consider the way they are kept as a possible reason for them being moody. If she wasn't very bad whilst on regumate then I would still strongly consider her, I would be put off if nothing seemed to work.

How expensive is it?

its £3,800 - 9 years old, described as a very laid back mare, great at shows etc, just mareish when in season - she sounds perfect for what I want to do and for my confidence - just having looked at SO MANY horses for the past 5 months I am loathe to make another wasted journey!

Yes it would be the reason I would not buy the mare. Has the owner actually looked into WHY she is like this during her season? Or has she just gone down the cheap route of whopping her on Regumate and hope for the best?

This is a very good point. My mare is 'difficult'

and I had her scanned and her ovaries checked for cyst etc - turns out she had an infection, which the vet treated before putting her on regumate to see if that improved her behaviour.

It is quite expensive (though Pig regumate is the same thing but cheaper) and it is a very powerful hormone but it does seem to help a lot of mares. T

o the point above - I would be concerned as to whether a full investigation has been done. Is there a way you can find out?

Oooh, may have to try the girl on it. Nah, I like to know that she is still a girl with everyone saying 'oh, he looks nice.' Hmph.

Have they said exactly what she does, as it does depend. Is it OTT or just a bit of, 'eugh, boy!!!'? I am not sure I would want to take something on that is dependent on a rather expensive supplement for a percentage of the year.

Would not consider buying as I could not compete her under the rules I ride under as it would count as a prohibited substance

Hmmm. Not sure, I think I would ask a lot of questions before buying tbh.

Mine gets a bit silly & is, to put it bluntly, a slapper when she is in season. Even jumped a 6ft hedge to get to the geldings next door

)

Thankfully she is ok & things like the above only happen once or twice a year. She gets a little touchy & sensitive but that's about it.

If I were you I'd definitely be doing some research. It's the expense as well as anything else.
