Mares or Geldings

Which downside would you be least worried about in your horse?

I used to think geldings were best until I got my mare and I switched - I've got two mares now

You missed the either/neither option!!

I love my mare, she's safe as houses, talented and has had a beautiful baby.

My geldings are so very different; Dom is quirky and odd but talented and funny and Merlin is the perfect hack but a complete fool.

All three love people and are affectionate and cuddly and I wouldn't change any of them for the world.

I love mares. Especialy chestnut ones. I like there attitude and just seem to get on with them.
Just don't tell Herbie i said that.

ETS what about stallions? I love them to. Herbie is riggie so i do love him realy. I love anything querky.

Geldings for me - I want the same horse everyday. I can do moody and unpredictable myself, I don't need a mare too

Actually, I've only ever met one mare I ever took to and she was a 'mans' horse, ie she preferred men to women usually, according to her owner

I have a mare but havent had a gelding although when I first started looking for a horse I wanted a gelding. The next time I am horse hunting I would probably try a gelding. My instructor thinks geldings are less stubborn to ride.

ETA: I bonded with my mare quite quickly and she is so affectionate which I love. I'm not sure if a gelding would be the same.

OMG geldings all the way for me!!!!!
I have a part time job at the mo riding 99% mares, and I think at the end of the day my attitude to life is a bit too marish to get on with a mare.....
Some mares I get on with fab, but others I just clash and get into fights with and it never goes well! (not actual fights obv!!!)

Where as I am yet to meet a gelding (even arsey ones!) that I don't like or get on with eventually.
I think I actually get on with stallions better than mares!

I love both; my mare is the least mareish pony I have ever met, and is an absolute sweety, my sister's gelding is so placid and such a softy, and my gelding is sure he is a stallion, so can be a bit of an idiot, but all are talented. Would never really chose one over the other.

I have always been a mare person but i think i am now starting to see the benifits of having a gelding. Less hormones!

Maybe the next one will be a gelding

Mares all the way. Would choose one over a gelding every single time, though wouldn't rule one out. Yet to meet a gelding that I like instantly like I so with mares.

I find that they are much more "one person" horses, ie they know who you are rather than being "whatever" about it. I think you can get a better bond and partnership with them. I also think that once you have a mare on your side, they will do anything for you. With Bean, once you took the time to really look and understand her, and I spent hours just faffing with her, she was the best.

Since looking for my new one, I have seen 3 mares, 3 geldings. Didn't get on with any of the geldings, didn't like one of the mares. Had one vetted (sadly unsuitable) and having another vetted tomorrow. (keep your fingers xed for me

So that kinda says it really, I wouldn't rule out either, but seem to prefer and get on with mares much better. Plus if they go kaput due to non hereditary injury, and they are good enough, you can always have a baby. Can't do anything with boys...

We have 3 geldings and a mare- i'm a gelding person.
The mare is 30, has been a one in a million, absolute gold dust. Complete mare, bites, kicks, is the biggest cow bag at times.
I prefer geldings and have avoided getting another mare, we just don't get along too great.
OH has 5geldings, he hates mares and will not go near mine.

Give me a mare any day...I love the stroppy moody ones...I feel that we are similar

Once you click with a mare I feel it is better than any relationship I've ever had with a gelding.

Well my OH is very laid back, and his horses reflect that, he gets on his horses, and on Oshk, doesn't think about it and they go beautifully- It's VERY annoying.
My mare has got more grumpy with age, she bites when you put her rug on, she bites when you do her girth, she bites when you look at her funny, and she is quite fussy with her head, OH just can't take how much like me she is, grumpy as HELL!

Well I love both (even though I have three geldings now!) but I feel that I get a little less attitude with my boys, even though they are all quirky in their own ways. My theory is that they're like humans, and therefore not as clever as girls

joking of course

I've ridden geldings but somehow my heart belongs to mares and I'm not entirely sure why! I ride several horses for friends who need an extra pair of hands but the one I've bonded with is the pain in the arse mare who really IS the stereotype embodied, yet is simultaneously sweet and clever

When I pick up the horse search again (not picky just seem to be unlucky!) I'll be viewing a mix of both and would never say no to a gelding who felt right and fit the bill

I much prefer geldings - I find that if you have the right relationship with them they will try every bit as hard for you as a mare will and you don't have to put up with the moods when they are in season.

Mares, I am looking for a horse and it's mares only. For a multitude of reasons, the main one being that when I leave home for university or if it becomes lame we could potentially breed from it. I'm not saying I would breed from any lame horse, only with vets advice etc. I have been in this situation before and 3 years on we have 2 fit and healthy horses

!

C_B - fingers crossed it all goes well for you tomorrow
