Mares

I have actually given up doing anything other than hacking with my mare if she's very mareish when in season. The last time she had a whole week off because I couldn't get any sense out of her - all she wanted to do was squirt at geldings and make babies.

I'm trying to be kind she is normally on Regumate, but I want to give her a break as she's been on it for over a year

I just gave up with mine when she had a couple of days like that. The final straw came when I tried to put the saddle on and she took a chunk out of me - a few days off followed as, being a woman, I can sympathise entirely with period pains!

I'm sure she'll be fine - can you give her a couple of days off?

Poor girl. I totally sympathise - I came off the pill (first time without any sort of hormonal contraception for 11 years) earlier this year and lasted a month. I was mental, crying all the time, angry for no reason, got upset at every little thing. So I guess it must be a bit like that.

I know nothing about Regumate - can they be on it for long periods, or do they have to have a break?

My 1st mare was very stroppy but once in the sj arena she jumped like a stag so I was very lucky there.

My 2nd mare permanently wanted everything her own way 24/7 52 weeks of the year. She was only happy grazing, coming in & out at night and going for the odd hack so I sold her to a family that only wanted her for that.

3rd mare (my current horse) is an absolute dream!
I only know that she's in season because she flirts with the boys! She loves everything that we do and never objects to anything!

I generally give mine a few days off when she first comes into season then start work after 3/4 days - seems to work. She doesn't get silly so much as she just can't seem to concentrate and then we both get stressed.
