My maiden mare produced a lovely filly foal at the end of April and, as we had no dramas, I decided to put her in foal again. This time I'me going to have to pick up the semen from another stud which, mercifully, isn't very far away.

Right, I didn't want her covered on her foal heat but on the next one. She took 4 weeks to have a foal heat. She's not obvious when she's in season but the stud owners noticed that she was very interested in the 3 year old colt they were lungeing in the adjacent arena so brought her in and scanned her. Too late, she'd ovulated but we then had something to go by. They injected her with prostaglandin Tuesday of last week (12th) with the intention of scanning her on Saturday as it normally takes 3-5 days to bring them fully back in . . you might guess where this is going . . . . scanned her Saturday and . . yep. . . she'd already ovulated. Cue phone call to other stud to tell them I won't imminently be collecting the semen. Fortunately they are very understanding as they have their own mares.

They are now going to inject her again on Friday and scan on Sunday as she obviously ovulates pretty quickly . . .
I don't really want a July foal next year so keep your fingers crossed. . . . oh, the joys of breeding . . . .

I had the opposite issue last year, we injected a mare in called for the semen, ovuplanted the mare, semen arrived mare didin't ovulate, then we called for more semen gave her another ovuplant, semen arrived put it in, yeap she didn't ovulate, that follicle then started to receed and she popped up a new one, we now needed our third lot of semen in a week and on a sunday! So I had to drive from Gloucester to West Yorkshire and back, got back to the vets at midnight and inseminated her and thank god she ovulated the next day and was infoal, I now have a bouncing baby boy so it was all worth while! As you say....the joys of breeding....

I have to say she probably had a usual foal heat but she just didn't show because at four weeks is spot on for the following season. I have a few mare that don't show in foal heat at all, we usually let them go over the foal heat and inject them when the foal is 17 to 20 days old to bring them back into season.

Bloss had the prostoglandin injection - but she had it on the friday night and was back in the vets on the monday night and being scanned twice a day from then on in - 4days seems a bit late to me to leave it before the first scan, my vet was insistant that we scanned her after 3 days and took it from there.

They're going to check her earlier now. She's going to be injected tomorrow (Saturday) and scanned first thing Tuesday morning. Apparently most of the mares have been coming in early following injection this year so fingers crossed we're in time this time!!!
They managed to get it exactly right first time last year . . . . .
