Mark and Drunken Disorderly out of WEG at first trot up!!! So so so sad. The horse apparently developed a corn last night and whilst it was poulticed, etc. he was obviously not 100% ad was therefore spun.
They really didn't deserve this luck...especially as this would have been the horse's last championship as he is now 16. I am so gutted for them

How gutting for him

I might be about to make a very silly comment but would they not have known the horse was going to be spun in advance and presented their reserve rider instead (or is there a declaration window or something?)

Looking at the start lists I don't think they had the full complement of 6 anyway. The Irish have not had much luck this year. Very sad, always thought he and the horse were one of the best ambassadors for the sport.

jonty's not running as he he didn't take his horse over there as he wasn't quite right. They've now got to subsititute their individual rider for the team as they had already lost sacha. So gutted......

In response to ben & jerry...Carl was 100% sound this morning (that they could see). The put studs in him this afternoon for his last work before trot up and he was slightly off afterwards but not enough to worry but believe that it just got worse and so when trotted up he was n't right and obviously when spun was lame.
They didn't have a travelling reserve as 2 of the other horses were not 100% and so only took 5 in all.

Such tough luck. It's bad enough to have to pull out shortly before the event, but to get as far as the eve of the competition only for a problem to arise must be heartbreaking.

MDM surely this must mean that Austin is now on the team?!?

Am so sorry for Mark Kyle though- that horse is just fantastic and so deserved his chance at the WEG.

Austin didn't go from what I have heard because he didn't think his horse was ready enough hence why he didn't take the other individual slot.

once before at Burghley 2002. He stood on a stone outside of the trot up and was instantly lame. Was only going there to do the dressage anyway as was entered for the Euros at Punchestown the next week. Went off to them and sailed through fine.
He is a funny moving horse as he has always had one side of his pelvis higher than the other which makes him move funny behind. As such is people who don't know this look at his trot he can seem off...hence why he has been held a couple of times especially if his trot up comes after and especially big.flashy moving horse.
