this is just what i have been told so don't shot the messenger but a very good friend of my was stopped by a policemen (who is a friend of hers) who told her about horses which has been plaited and there tails cut in lancing area of west sussex.

i have confirmed this which my CSO friend who said it has been happening all over west sussex.

i haven't seen this for myself but have been advised as my second pony is on loan just down the road from on of the "targets" these horses are off the beaten track so to speak so highly unlikely to be kids.

please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.

But why would someone 'mark' a horse to come back for it, when they know full well that everyone is aware of this 'scam'

these dreadlocks (or plaits ) appear in greasy dirty ungroomed manes all the time! due to wind and rain! if your horse has a nice groomed and sparyed manes the dredlocks wont appear! scaremongering! check your horses twice or 3 times a day (which you should anyway)

like i said i haven't seen the horses but they also have had they tails cut to which to me would say something else going on not just the wind. i believe (not 100% which horse but from what i have been told about the location) the horses are very well cared for. check several times a day brought in at night and groom to with an inch of there life.

i am not trying to scaremonger i am only relaying what i have been told. the police are taking it seriously so obviously they think there is something in it.

The police advise accordingly if for no other reason than to cover themselves in the event of the horse actually being stolen - lock gates, stable at night, change fields etc). This in turn adds credence to the rumour as worried owners report that the police are taking the matter seriously. It's only when it's looked in to in more detail that it becomes apparent that this scaremongering has no basis in fact.

There was a report on Spirit FM Radio concerning a yard manager in West Sussex finding a plait in one of their horse's tails (not manes) last week. Unfortunately the link to it doesn't have the report on it anymore.

Two people have confirmed they know the yard manager, so a real person has reported this.

I have a mare that has been plaited 3 times this week - she is well groomed and in at night. Friday night 3 men in the field with torches. Have moved the mare to a different location now but please beware.

Thieves and people wanting a laugh must come on here too.

Thieves will stop plaiting/twisting horses manes if they intend to steal them because then it's obvious to the owner, and people wanting a laugh will go round the countryside plaiting!

I feel there is a large amount of chinese whispers going on here - and I'm not having a go at you LadyRascasse.

When I mentioned all this to a friend recently she said to me that between the 2 of us we know about 100 horse riders/owners in our area and have any of them had their horses stolen or tampered with?

I only know of one. 5yrs ago.
