I remember reading a post a while ago about feeding marmite to horses with sweetitch...can anyone tell me how it is supposed to work?
How much to give?
My mum's horse has suffered with sweetitch all of his life and I've never heard of this but we are willing to try anything. He is in during the day and out at night in the summer and wears his Boett 24/7. We spray Deet all over him before he goes out too.
Any other ideas what else we could be doing?

I feed one tablespoon full of marmite and one tablespoon full of brewers yeast in a sandwhich every day for sweetitch. It certainly seems to reduce the irritation. I think marmite is to repel the midges and brewers yeast is to reduce the reaction.

just remember.....the flies will eaither love it or hate it!

I thought you let them out during day, brought in at night? 4pm-10am. Thats what I've always done for my mare as that's when the midges bite

The midges bite most at dawn and dusk, so thats when its important for them to be in. (If you are going to bring them in, I don't stable my boy at all during the summer as it just provides him with more places to scratch himself on!) If it's not possible to just bring them in at dawn and dusk and then chuck them out again, then its perfectly fine to have them out at night and in during the day, or vice versa, so long as they are in during peak biting periods.

Yes marmite helped my loan boy...but he only had it very mildly so I can't say how much it will help for a more severe case?

Isn't it something to do with the yeast in it or the B vitamins...I can't really remember sorry!

But he LOVED a round of marmite sandwiches once a day
