Hi all,

My little 12.2 pony is a bit of a headchucker. He's pretty good most of the time but when asked to jump (or go over trotting poles, which he also finds incredibly exciting!) he throws his head up in the air and goes for it.

He also will do the occasional sprint during a schooling session i.e. you ask him for trot and he'll suddenly bounce into canter with no warning, complete with theatrical headtossing.

My friend suggested we should have him in a martingale but he's mainly a lead rein pony who gets the odd bit of extra work when the other pony's otherwise taken, so I'm hesitating.

What d'you suggest..? On the one hand, I don't like putting anything extra on them. Partly because I'd rather not anyway, but mainly because I'm too lazy to take different tack on & off all the time - the odd time I take him out hacking, I'll keep on his colourful training reins and kiddie numnah rather than spend five minutes changing over :o

D'you think he should be in a martingale for fast work or will he work through this..?

Ta!

ETA This only happens when he's off-lead. Didn't mean to make him sound like the original psycho pony as he's a real sweetheart :)
