My youngster has sustained a kick and has to have 50ml of antibiotics and bute twice a day for at least six days, possibly twelve depending on how well it clears up.

He isn't food driven but yesterday (day one) happily ate Rowan Barbary Ready Mash Extra with a bit of extra cool mix in it and some Equus Summer Shine (garlic, fenugreek, linseed and seaweed) and sliced carrots. Today he said no thanks and chucked most of it around the stable.

What do I use as a tempter? I'm thinking molasses as the standard thing, but anything else you'd recommend? I did wonder about spearmint? Help please so I can get tonights dose into him!!

It is almost impossible to get them to take bute if given in the feed once they have decided not to eat it, however hard you try to disguise it, you either need to give it by hand in some way, inside a sandwich or treat, syringe it in or get danilon instead which is much more palatable , otherwise you are just going to waste it and get fed up with trying different things. I find syringing is the easiest to ensure it gets where it is supposed to, provided they are not difficult about that also.

Thanks both, syringing doesn't work with this lad, he is fussy in the mouth but worse than that, he has a broken front tooth so is uber sensitive! I wish I could explain to him to stop picking fights (and losing!)

Feel your pain, have just finished a bute course with my 4 year old. I had it syringe in end with Ella's kitchen baby food!!the carrot apple and parsnip one. Meant he couldn't spit it out!you may struggle if you are unable to syringe though.

I've managed to get bute into mine by making golden syrup sandwiches with it sprinkled in the middle - lots of bread and lots of syrup! You could also try peppermint cordial, not always the easiest thing to get hold of but it has worked. Failing all that, get Danilon!

i had this 2 weeks ago and was advised to mix with warm porridge. i used the ready brek sachets and my mare woofed it mixed with a bit of hi fi....

Jam sandwich worked for my very fussy mare and syringing it in for another.

Danilon is far more palatable than bute but is impossible to syringe!

My vet years ago used to tell me to add to icing sugar in a syringe. I'd give danilon instead my fussy old git eats one a day every day
