hi
Basically my horse recently had his 3rd eyelids removed. He had cell carcinomas and they needed to be removed before it spread to the rest of the eye. The vet suggested getting a UV blocking fly mask. As I needed it asap and couldn't wait for one to be delivered I bought one that blocks 80% of UV rays. For once he has decided to actually keep it on (I think he has finally realised they are not evil brain destroying devices and are actually helpful), but he still seems to be struggling when ridden, and we think he may actually still be getting dust anddebris in his eye, even with the mesh, and obviously with no third eyelid he has no natural defense.
So I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of horses with removed 3rd eyelids, did they spend the rest of their lives in masks? If so can you reccommend one? My vet suggested getting a guardian mask, but reading through reviews the eye sections seeems to gather debris, and obviously I can't let that happen or he will end up with infections. Does anyone know of a decent 90% UV mask, with really fine mesh, that wont store debris and cause more problems?
Any advice is welcomed because I don't fancy spending loads on a mask (like I have done already) only to still be struggling.
Thanks
