What are the benefits?

Has anyone given or had someone in to give their horse a massage?

I enquired about one and the lady charges £45. My horse is 13, never done a lot but thought it may be beneficial as well as a nice treat?

Absolutely!!! My Gus adores massage, and practically falls over he gets so relaxed after one. One of the liveries at our yard is an Equine Sports thereapist - he's very good and extremely knowledgable and has a real feel for the horses. The first time he massaged Gus, he did pinpoint a number of areas to concentrate on and Gus had a lot more movement and swing in his stride afterwards. I try and make sure he gets a massage every couple of months or so, just to keep him supple.

Chris is also an Instructor, so he is able to help with exercises that compliment the massage and his findings. PM me if you want his details.

Massage for any animal is great. My horses get one once a week,(I am trained in massage and as a Reiki Master)

Depending how they are depends on what kind of massage they get. I also use Aromatherapy.

yes it is great - you can do it yourself - i saw a book advertised on the BHS website about massage for your horse. I use a massage pad before riding and do notice my horse is more supple

I masage my horses hamstrings and back for riding him and after riding him.

I was shown how to do it correctly by a specialist vet who treated him a few months ago.

My horse loves it he goes all floppy when I start doing it.

I've been thinking of getting someone to give my horse a massage too. Can anyone recommend someone who does it in the Hertfordshire are? (sorry for hijacking your post!)

My boy gets mctimony and a sports massage every 6 months. I love the lady who comes and although buds is generally spot on (lightly worked 4 yr old) I know he loves it. And saw the results for myself when she worked on previous horse who had a sore/weak back and shoulder.
I have never had a massage however........... Hmm!

My horse has the back lady out about every 3 months or so, if he doesn't need anything doing then he got a lovely massage, I could see the look of contentment on his face, and his disappointment when it had finished! (I'm sure I'm anthropormorphising!)
If you want to be able to do massage yourself then this is a great book. I've got a copy and go through the routines whenever I have the time.

It's no replacement for a professional physio/chiro but can help keep the horse supple and comfortable between visits.

Never been down that route, but my two are going to be part of a friend's case study for her equine massage course, so will get a few freebies. Will be very intersting.
