Had the vet out on monday & her back is completely fine, her teeth are fine & he also checked her for lameness with flexions & watching her being lunged in a headcollar. She's sound as a pound. He's also advised to put her on a supplement of selenium & vitamin e & a change of diet until she's properly fit to stop a slight neuromuscular/stringhalty kind of action that she occasionally has.

He said that it sounds as if she has a history of behavioural problems, hardly suprising as she came from a dealer.

Now, she's been absolutely good as gold ever since she was ridden by the girl who does the breakers & seems to be back to normal - what can I attribute her behaviour to?

Seems like she just needed a seriously good work out & the change in routine knocked her out of kilter more than i realised...

NOW, how do I stop this happening again?

I am having weekly private lessons with the girl who sorted her out to intensively improve my seat so hopefully I'll be able to sit her if she broncs again.

Also, what should I feed to provide a high oil, low sugar, high protein & fibre dinner that will help build muscle & also improve her feet condition?
She's fed supplements of biotin & now selenium & vitamin e.

SORRY it's so long, just everyone on here is so helpful & knowledgeable!

Thank you SO much in advance!

Biscuits & hot chocolate all round

Google EPSM DIET and you will get all the info you need. Just to get you started... http://www.ruralheritage.com/vet_clinic/epsm.htm lots of the EPSM stuff talks about the condition in heavy horses, but it is as common as muck in WBs etc.

Suitable feeds in the UK...

Winergy Equilibrium Growth
Saracen Re-Lieve
Anything for laminitics!

Plus corn oil... or any pure non-hydrogenated veg oil.

Outshine or Equijewl if you are feeling wealthy!

Selenium and Vit E from Feedmark... seems expensive but it has more active ingredient by weight and it is 2 for 1 at the mo.

MSM is great too.

Forgot to add... this condition is usualy degenerative, but, through diet and exercise it can be arrested, then reversed... if it is not too far advanced. Sounds like you have caught it at a very early stage. No reason why the horse shouldn't have a full active healthy life. Wil need to be on low starch/sugar High fiber/oil diet for life.

This is mainly a precautionary measure - he's not entirely sure as it's so slight and she's been steadily putting on muscle & is a LW so not a sort of genetic HW type thing.

But worth a shot!
