I think (franticly touching wood!!!) I might have found the key to training Otto's recall!

This morning OH threw my Iron tablets to me, and Otto really perked up, so tonight when we took him for a walk I thought I would give it a go and see if it caught his attention, as nothing else has worked so far!

So as we walked along with him mooching around at the end of the lunge line I stopped and rattled the tub, and...

He came trotting straight back!!

Had a biscuit and a HUGE fussed and carried on. Did it every now and again and it worked everytime.
Then he was in the undergrowth, obviously on the scent of something, so I rattled the tub and again, he came straight back!

I am so pleased with him! He was just generally alot better tonight, seemed to keep checking where we were. So fingers crossed this keeps working!
I do feel slightly silly walking around with a pill tub in my hand, but hey, if it works I don't care if the neighbours think I'm odd!

He also did his first "retrieve" tonight

Clearly he thought the remains of a Muntjac's back leg would make a delightful present!

As a reward for being such a good boy, he got a special bone thingy (not the back leg!), which has hasn't put down since we got back

Good for u, who would have thought..the simplest of things....."no, not u silly"

the Iron tablets

could lead to recall result

Lol.....messing....... as always

, fabby results for u, u must be chuffed

I've been making ridiculous noises since we got him in the hope something would catch his attention

Raspberries worked slightly, but only once he was nearby.
Rustling the treat bag had no effect, but this has an instant effect!

Luckily I have a bottle of out of date vitamin tablest knocking around, as I have to rattle them fairly hard, and I don't want to end up having to take tablet dust!
grin.gif

I am extra chuffed, as I was told that I had no hope in getting him to listen to me!

Taking him off puppy food has made a huge difference, and we are still only in the swapping over stage, so he is still having mainly puppy food. But he is no longer and complete and untter nutter!

You might aswell start the whistle with the tub shaking now.

That's the next step

have already been practicing blowing it out of his hearing, so my peep peeps are perfect!

OH can't even get it to make a whistle noise, never mind stop and start it sharply!

Fantastic news!

Dogs eh, you by them the most expensive thing & the cheapest thing you fall over is more interesting for them!! Typical!

Glad Otto like to retrieve the unusual as well! Mind you should be glad it was just a leg! Wait till he brings you back a whole one!! LOL!

Cheapest thing is definately true, we bought him a posh bed the other day, he eyed it up, picked it up and marched off with it to his scabby old duvet to have a good chew!!

It was removed before he could do any damage and returned to the shop!

I assume it was a muntjac leg, as it was really only bone and scabby bits, but it was too big for a rabbit. Could have been a hare or a fox I suppose, but the woods there are full of deer!

It's been a week of breakthroughs, as my Mum's IWS retrieved his first ever dead game yesterday! It's only taken three years!

I'm really glad to hear you've found something that works, but I think I must stop reading Parelli threads. The moment I started reading about shaking a pill-tub I started thinking "Wow, she could sell that as a concept", I could already see the commercials, "Only Henmeisters rattling-tub can do the trick..."

Sorry, I really am glad, it usually is the less complicated devices that works.

*Note to myself* Must stop reading Parelli threads, Must stop reading Parelli threads, Must stop reading Parelli threads...*

Now that is a good idea, I could sell them for £100 a pot plus, my own patented lunge lines at £200 each, and then there would be the training DVD's £20 each, but of course you need the entire series, and there is always a new DVD coming out....
