Today I desided to jump Herbie in the school. Normaly I ride first thing before anyone else is around but couldn't today. Anyway I was just getting my tack and my landlady said she was going to ride her horse in about an hour. I rushed up to the school and put the jumps up and threw tack on Herbs and warmed up. I had set up a very small course and had even put up a spread. (I'm terrified of spreads and Herbs has never jumped one before) I warmed him up and jumped a couple of xpoles. He was being a good boy :) Then we jumped the spread. I was alittle nervous and messed up the first time but Herbs jumped it like a good boy :D.
Next I worked out what course we where going to do. (We've never jumped a course before either) As I did this my landlady came up got her horse out the field and tied it to the school fence. I started my course. As I approached the upright she appeared out the barn and gave her horse some haylidge. Herbs looked over to see what was happening and so did I  By this time we had arrived at the jump. Herbs went to take off but for some reason I threw myself over the jump. I sailed over Herbs head and landed on the otherside of the jump. Luckly for me Herbs aborted takeoff and landed on the jump. The poor pony just stood there looking at me asif to say "Mum what did you do that for  "
I got up rebuilt the jump, gave herbs a pat to say sorry, got back on, jumped a small cross pole then did the upright again. Herbs was a little angel you wouldn't have guessed what had just happened. :) I even did the spread again.
Then I called it a day. I wanted to finish on a good note and my landlady was ready to go out riding which I knew would cause problems.
I'm such an idiot. I knew something would happen. Why didn't I wait till after she had ridden hers to ride Herbs :( I feel awful and very embarrest. The first time I have ever fallen off Herbs  I've sat all the bucking, leaping, rearing and spinning only to throw myself off over a jump
I feel bad for Herbs and just hope my stupidity hasn't ruined my confidance jumping him as he loves it so much.
Oh and of all the body parts I could have landed on I had to land on my left hip  Now It's bloomin acheing like mad. Atleast the school is soft to land on not like the road ;) :p
I'm such an idiot.

Poor you - sorry about your fall, but don't beat yourself up about it. You did the right thing by getting back on, jumping it, and ending on a positive note.

You're not an idiot at all - but I would suggest you need to totally focus on you & your horse in the school instead of what else is going on - hard, I know, I am very easily distracted too!

Something I've learnt from watching good riders and not so good riders, is that the good riders focus. They don't chat to other people in the school, and don't even notice if someone goes past - hence their horse ends up also focussing.

Worse things have happened... the good thing is, you now know that Herbie can cope with you falling off, and it hasn't horrified him :)

Sorry about your hip... always the way :(

On another good note, your description made me laugh... just a little :) and sympathetically :)

I've never jumped more than two jumps in a row so I'm very impressed. I tend to focus on staring at the jump more than anything else so my horse tries to refuse. I've always disliked jumping.

Tomorrow's another day, chin up :)

Don't worry, it sounds like Herbie wasn't very phased by it so I'm sure he'll be fine, he sounds very good.

Did your landlady see you fall off? Hope not but at least if she did you could have blamed it on her for distracting you! lol :) Hope you are ok. Try not to worry about it and as others say just try and focus more when you're riding in future.

Thanks guys. :) I just feel like I let Herbs down. :(

JennBags Your so right about focasing and normaly I do. People think I'm rude when I'm riding sometimes as I don't say HI when they walk onto the yard but i'm buisy focasing on riding. Today I was just having one of those days.

sychnant glad I could provide some morning entertainment to more than just my landlady ;) :p :D :D

Sorry you fell, and I hope you aren't too sore.

Well done for getting back on, and for not making it a stressful or horrible experience for Herbie. Some sharp horses really freak out when someone falls so it's good that he was calm.

Last time I fell off it was in a lesson with my old Uni riding club. I was riding a sharp TB who spooked and bucked, but not in a dangerous way so I just laughed and said it didn't bother me. We were walking off at the end of the session and the rider behind me said 'OMG I could never ride that horse, I'd be straight off'. I turned to answer her, the horse stepped the other way, and I fell off in walk! :D I was sooo embarrassed, much worse than if I'd been bucked off.

If this is the silliest thing you've ever done you're doing really well!! your horse sounds quite genuine, Ice treats me like cut glass since I fell off out hacking months ago, still a sod with instructor but dead careful with me so it may even act in your favour!

Hope you're not too sore, Horse will just wonder why you did that or feel a bit guilty for dropping you, doubt he'll be traumatised, I wouldn't worry. Maybe leave the superman cape at home next time though!!

I wish I had time to be jumping in the week, he sounds like he really enjoyed his 1st course so you must be getting it right on the whole.

:)

Steorra That made me smile :) Thanks for sharing. Herbs can do some impressive leaps and bucks and I've always sat them. I realy shouldn't have fallen off at the jump but i'm just so nervous of jumping and paniced when I realised we where about to take off

Paint it Lucky she did see and I think she felt alittle bad but I reassured her it was all my fault.

LaurenM upto now we've only ever jumped one jump at a time. Maybe it was to much for my poor little brain to jump more than one. :p ;) :D

It may sound wierd but you may find you are a bit more confident now as sometimes the thought of falling off at a jump is worse than actually falling off. Thats what I found anyway. But it sounds like herbie wasnt bothered so thats good :) and I wouldnt say it was a fail from either of you really just one of those things. Sounds like herbie is making good progress as well :D

Thankyou dafthoss Herbs is so cool. It didn't put him off at all. I was alittle worried it might have but I think he loves jumping to much to let it bother him :) I'm normaly such a wimp about jumping normaly a fall would put me off and I wouldn't want to get back on. But for some reason I feel sort of safe on Herbs even after the fall. :D
