Masta rug fittings - true to size?

Hi guys - ive only ever had 2 Masta rugs and found both came up quite big.

I normally buy weatherbeeta but have come accross a great deal on a rug called 'MASTA FULL NECK HEAVY TURNOUT RUG' its on a discount on equestrian clearance.com.

I just wondered how they came up size wise before i order - does anyone have one?
My horses are warmbloods and tbs if that helps.
 
Not sure about that rug but the Masta's I have are huge on my chunky Tb and TB x ID. Really big round neck even on last hole so I'd go for smaller size if I got another one :)
 
I've had a quick look but not sure which you mean, probably me being dense! I use Masta for my highland who has a massive neck and huge shoulders, it fits him really well. I only use the CheckTech ones though, have found the Zing range much less durable.
 
I love the Masta rugs, they fit my chunky Fell really nicely. Two of the horses on the yard I work on have the Masta Check Tech XT http://www.robinsons-uk.com/products/search.asp?keyword=masta#sku.51418 One is a small TB and the other is a fairly chunky ID and they fit both well. I think if your horse has fairly narrow shoulders I'd go for a size down, but Ive never had a problem with the fitting x
 
I am not keen on the Mastas now although I still have a stable rug for my horse. I got him the rain sheet and it's just too wide across the front and slips back. Maybe they are better suited to broader type horses?
 
I've never found the quality of Masta rugs to be up to much.... although that may well be my bad luck!

They've always ripped across the top seam IME.
 
I find in Masta a 6ft6 stable rug comes up the right size but I need to go down a size on a turn out or it drowns him. I generally buy the weatherbeeta landa freestyle turnouts in a 6ft 6 and my lad is a 16.3 warmblood with skinny shoulders. Also my OH usually get a 7ft rug in most brands for his huge beast and has little to spare but finds a 6ft 9 masta turnout fairly roomy. Hope this helps figure it out...

I agree with the slipping back issue I will not buy Masta turnouts where they will be worn without a stable rug under as it will move back and cut in at the withers.
 
I bought a 6'9 Masta Zing heavyweight turnout for my 16.2 I.D x. He is fairly big boned and I had to take it back as it was too tight around the shoulders, bought a Rhino heavyweight instead which fits better. I have a couple of half neck masta turnouts which i have had for years, had repaired several times in different places but they are still going!

This is the opposite to what others have found and i think the fit of the different styles varies, I prefer to buy from somewhere i can easily return unless I know the fit is right. I bought a heavyweight from Swish online which was a nice rug but made for a giraffe I think either that or my chap has a very short neck, it didn't suit his shape at all, but good for a long narrow horse! Luckily I saved the £10 it would have cost me to return it in the post as someone else on the yard bought it from me for her horse (not calling her horse a giraffe, but it does have a long neck!). Trial and error i think! :D
 
They are true to size (as in the correct place to measure a rug from) however they are not very roomey around the neck and wither area, as in they will pull over at the withers once your horses head is down to the ground, so if your horse has big set back shoulders or high withers (say a TB) I'd avoid getting one and opt for a different make, they do seem to fit your native types better if you go up a size if they are quite broad.
 
Thats intersting Kenzo. I'm about to say the exact opposite!

I find that they are normal size in length, but are big around the shoulder. I have ISHs that are half tb half id pretty much, and they slip down around the shoulder - both are medium weights with decent shoulders and chests (far from TB).

I find that there isn't enough room in rambo at the shoulder - which contradicts someone else!

I do like weatherbeaters on them fit wise.

I guess that this thread says that you should stick to the brand that you know fits your horse well! They can be different on different horses!
 
V, I'd save up and spend the extra money on your weatherbeta's or I may know where you can get some Mark Todd's at very reasonable prices.

I've brought J and A masta's before, A's was awful on her and J's wasn't much better. Its all the shape round shoulders/neck it just wasn't right at all.

I wouldn't say they were tight around the shoulder or neck as in when you check with your hand when they are stood up to hand, I just mean once the head is down they tend to pull over the wither area, so can only presume it's how they are cut rather than sizewise, I know a few on our yard that have TB's and the Masta's won't touch them, where as the weatherbeta's and the Amigo's fit them better.

Yep certainly different on all the breeds when you read everyone's replies though. :D
 
i have the heavy masta weight outdoor.

its a fantastic rug but does come up big!

my mares a 6'9 and i had to order a 6'6, so maybe order a size smaller for a truer fit

I really don't like the fit of masta rugs at all. I have several, as do my liveries. I have stopped using mine and hate changing the liveries masta rugs as they are so fiddly and don't fit well on any horse I have come across. Size wise though I reckon they are about right and not big or small.
 
Amigos are the best rugs IMO in terms of fit, comfort and value. I would always buy one now, although it's taken me many years to realise it!
 
Hi - I find that Masta rugs come up big - not keen on the turnout rugs tried them and sold them all now. I only buy Horseware usually Rambo if I can afford it and to be fair I find it works out cheaper in the long run as they last well and don't seem to need reproofing. I do have a couple of masta stable rugs which have lasted well they seem to be true to size and quite a good fit.

Just got mine an Amigo Mio for the Spring, it was only £30 and fits perfectly. I tried him in a Masta and it rubbed his shoulders and his mane (high neck turnout), would not buy one again, way too gapey around the neck (he is WC x TB, only a baby).
