I am getting a new saddle for Baron.

I am thinking of getting the Thorowgood T6 but I would really prefer leather.

So if I am wanting to get a saddle fitted to my horse, and try out a range of saddle do I get a Master Saddler or a Saddle Fitter?

Im a little confused. I am thinking of getting the Master Saddler from a large saddlery that stocks almost every range of saddle.

And if I bought a 2nd hand saddle and needed it adjusted for my horse which of the above would I need?

You need the Saddle Fitter not just a Master Saddler.

Can you explain the difference please?

I have just checked the website (of my local reccomended one) and they are qualified saddle fitters and Master Saddlers so hopefully they should be able to offer what I want.

Yes - Did you not get my reply? I will send another one

Well my local ones are listed as Master Saddlers but their website says they are qualified saddle fitters. A lot of people in the area use them so they come reccomended.

I have just heard horror stories on here about people paying to get a saddle fitted then finding it doesnt fit at all. If im spending such a lot of money I want to make sure im paying it to someone who can do the job.

A Master Saddler is a craftsperson who makes and mends saddles to a certain standard and is a member of the Society of Master Saddlers... having met their criteria of excellence. This person might make beautiful things, but may or may not know/be qualified to fit.

The Qualified Saddle Fitter status is another separate qualification. A saddle fitter may or may not be qualified to make/mend saddles as that is a separate qualification.

Just because someone's managed to get a qualification doesn't mean they're any good. Look at farriers, they all have to do loads of training and pass loads of tests, doesn't mean there aren't loads who you wouldn't let anywhere near your horse. If you want to place your trust in a saddler, get a hell of a lot of recommendations before you choose one.
