My terrier has just whelped her first litter, four gorgeous puppies, big and fa and healthy, but 48hours later the bitch has one 'breast' that is very swollen, i've looked up mastitis and the breast is large and swollen, and warm but not hot, its not sore at all and is makeing perfect milk. the pups dont seem to want to feed from it as it is so large. Is this mastitis that i have noticed early, or should i just massage it to keep soft and leave alone, advice greatfully recived.....

i got the pups to have a good feed on them over the last few hours and it is now much softened and i think it may just have been engorged... vet is booked for next week.....

You need some antibi`s like Noroclav from the vet..BUT my incredible secret is a homeopathic remedy that really WORKS every time.Get Belladonna 30c,dose every two hours the first day..reduce down to four times daily etc etc over four days.I PROMISE you the lump will just disappear in a couple of days,it is amazing stuff.I do use noroclav alongside, and if there is heat aspirin is a great anti inflamatory. The remedy is available from Galen Homeopathics, they are very very reliable and always seem to manage next day delivery. Just dealt with exactly the same condition myself with a girlie that whelped last Tuesday, she`s 10% now!!
AND BTW I am not a homeopathic fan usually.:D

Please don't use Belladonna - it is VERY toxic, I think one of THE most toxic plants, and has a lot of harmful side affects, the dose rate in a dog would need to be carefully calculated if it's known, plus it doesn't do anything for mastitis/lumps! Women used to use it to dilate their pupils to make them look pretty - it also made them blind, have heart palpitations, rashes, urinary problems etc. I think they use a derivative of it now for gastrointestinal problems!

Quite often after giving birth there is an excess of milk, but once the hormones settle and the puppies have been feeding from her and got the hang of it it should go down. I would get the vet to do a routine check up anyway, but as long as the lump is not hot, hard and painful and is producing normal milk - not chunky/curdled gross stuff, then she should be fine!

I think you need to study just how dilute these homeopathic remedies are !!Once you have..30c for instance means something daft like 300,000 dilution or less..you will then see that Belladonna used this way is absolutely safe.In fact ,it is so diluted my arguement has always been "of course it can`t work"...but for some reason it does.
I have used this particular remedy for many years now ,for exactly the situation the OP had,and certainly would NOT recommend anything I had not used and found 100% successful.
As I said,I am not a tunnel visioned fan of homeopathy, but those remedies that prove themselves to me are good old standbies.

that doesn't sound like mastitis to me. It sounds far more like a teat which hasn't been fed from, and has simply filled to such a size that no puppy can get its mouth around it!!

If the puppies refuse to feed from it, then keep stripping the milk out, until out of hunger, they latch on! You need to reduce the teat size to one which they can deal with! I feel sure that your bitch will be fine. Let us know how you get on.

Alec.

i sat up last night and striped it a bit then attached a different puppy each time when they wanted to feed, boobies are now fine and healthy, and i'm pooped!!:p thanks for the tips though....

maybe you could give me your recomendations for the best diet for a terrier bitch welping , just curious, she looks really well at the mo, i just wondered what youd recomend so i can compare...

Plenty of good raw meat and chicken wings for a natural source of calcium/phosphorus.Lots to drink, inc. milk with added raw egg whipped in.:D
Luckily it sounds indeed like an engorged teat, mine had a definite lump and heat..but the remedy sorted it completely in a couple of days.
